not sure about the AE86, but with my supra ones the bit that actually locks the seat belt has a clear cover over it... so you can actually just tilt it this wat and tat until you see the little lock unclick.
Note: this will take anywhere from 10 secs (for the second one) to several minutes (for the first one), possibly longer. swearing seems to help, as does gentle taps initially.

My soarer belts do this sometimes, so do the ones in my mates R31 GTS-R...
it needs to be flat and level, if i park my car on an incline then the seatbelts wont be going anywhere.
I had to drive until i was on flat ground, and gone over a few bumps and then it miraculously just freed itself.
quite odd... but yeah
try it on level ground, drive over a few bumps etc.
i sat there for like 20 minutes getting angrier and angrier trying to get mine to unlock lol

easier to free them up when they are out of the car...
i had some pictures of mine but i can't find them, i'm sorry.
look on the side of the reel/retractor... you'll see a little ball-bearing, which drops into a little spoon which is actually one end of a little lever, which the other end of locks off the sprocket on the side of the reel. i found with mine that the little lever was quite stiff and seized, so they weren't releasing... try and get a little bit of WD40 or the like down there, and keep working the reel back and forth to help the WD40 penetrate.
make sure you have the belts on the right sides, too... i vaguely recall them being specific, left and right?

Hi,
My car has non-retractable belts. I love them and wish they'd still make them.

My old MX62 had non-retractables in the back.
Next to the lack of power from the 5M-E, it was one of the other things I didn't like about that car! Retractables are so much neater!
With the non-retractables most of the time i would just tuck them away so you can't see the belts at all in the backseat, to keep it nice and neat and tidy.

Hi,
I've got hooks in the car that let me hang them up neatly. Also got those roof liner clips in case you want to pretend you're in the USA (where you don't have to wear seat belts) so you can fold the belts totally out of the way.
I find some retractable belts put undue pressure on my abdomen (I love that word) and that's why I don't like them all that much.

You just put the mechanisms back in the car, and they will work. they have to be at a very precise angle

NB: the above method will not work if the catch is in any way stuck (like one of my ma61 ones was)
