Fuel costs sooo much and my 1JZ is THIRSTY Tue, 06 September 2005 02:42 Go to next message
Now I know there are a heap of you 1j people out there and I'm sure you are all starting to feel the price of fuel.

So what sort of figures are you getting per 100k and how can we make ours better.

I have a 1J cressida with standard jzx81 set up but the cressidas exhaust and am getting 18-20L per 100k. I need to get that down and I'm going to start with a proper exhaust.

Suggestions?

was gonna say, that's terrible fuel economy.

even tho norbs and I have a few hundred less kgs, it shouldn't make that much difference (and I'm running aftermarket management, which should make it even worse). have you done a standard service on it recently? (timing, plugs, fluids, etc?) any error codes on your ecu? (like for a busted o2 sensor, which can ruin fuel economy?)

Geez, in my JZA70 I'll get 450k's out of 60L. Which I don't think is terrible for a boosted 1j..

I get about 250kms out of 30L in my single turbo 1jz corona. Answer the questions in the pm here mate as other people will use that info. as well Smile

That is mainly highway and some racing (at drags). 4.6:1 diff, 3100rpm on highway and 1340kg with 2 people in it.

whats that mainly city or highway driving?

There is a big difference in economy with those two.

Mine is great on fuel on the highway and also WAY WAY better on 98octane fuel. City driving with tasmania fuel and a short ratio diff is horrendous.

My cressida is an auto and has the standard turbos, JZX81 ecu, standard fuel pressure regulator.

The water temp looks normal on the cressida temp gauge - in the middle and steady.

I put in new plugs, did the timming and all fluids about 2000ks ago.

It is a heavy Cressida, but it shouldn't be worse than my 4L ford LTD.

What should I do to sort this out? Exhaust? Put on my 2 new Trust turbos? A proper exhaust? Dyno?

Get the thing dyno'd to see what the AFR is through the rev range... 1JZ's are known to run pretty rich from factory. Something like a SAFC should help curve that issue if that is the problem.

Does it run strangely at all? Something doesn’t seem right.

A SAFC will help but I think there is something else at fault here.

BTW the Toyota gauges are not very accurate at all. I would pull the thermostat out and check that as another guy here had terrible fuel economy and found that the be the cause.

Anyone with a copy of the current Zoom should be able to figure out what is going on with you.

I am running a stock 1J. Not a close to 10 second weapon!

I have a 1JZ Cressida and use about 14-15L per 100km around town. Did about 80kms on my current tank around town, then drove to Sydney (from Newcastle), did 4 passes at WSID, and drove home, and still have around 1/4 to 1/6 of a tank left. Will work out the fuel economy when I fill up next, driving the Mazda MX6 at the moment until next week, in the hope that fuel prices might fall slightly.

1550kg wet JZA70 m/t twin dumps > 3" exhaust > pod filter. 10:1 AFR from 5000rpm (no fuel computers). 246rwhp.
city driving peak our traffic 7 days. when its not peak hour the 1J gets hurt.

63L U98 go in tank, 523km come out.

12.046L p/100kms. ...pretty happy with that.

You are all getting a heap better economy than me. Even when you are driving like nuters.

I called my mate at Toyota today and he almost dropped the phone when I told him I was getting 100k to 20L.

He told me to bridge the diagnostic plug on the engine loom and then turn the ignition and watch the dash. The dash is out of the Cressida and not the Cresta but I'll see if it does any funky flashing type stuff.

I'll keep you posted.

Soarer JZZ30 auto. About 12/13 litres per 100 km. Mostly motorway. Cruising at 120kph / 150 kph depending on the likelihood of camera vans Smile (in the UK)

and we are paying around a pound (about 2.37 Australian dollars) for 98 octane -- 70 pounds / over 160 dollars to fill the tank
Sad.

Those UK prices are ridiculous! How can anyone afford to drive?

I suppose you have a better public transport system than Australia. But then again who doesn't!

much lower taxes on diesel though, and there wages are much higher than ours, have a look at a british nurses wage then convert it to aus dollars and compare to the aus wage and you'll be shocked. But the tube system is very good.

MX83 Cressida, 1JZ-GTE, auto, twin dumps, 3'' exhaust, standard air box, 1550kg. Driving 70% highway, 30% town/thrashing I got an average of 12.8l/100k.

I also changed the thermostat and checked all plugs and connections on the ignition sysyem and it helped. Before this it was nearly as thirsty as 1JRocket's.

In Australia I'm a well paid IT professional, when I was in London I got paid the same wage for working in a wreckers dissmanteling rusty 90's model cars.

That is how they can afford the petrol. When wages and all that are taken into account I found it to be about the same for petrol, but rego and insurance was REALLY cheap there.
