Hey I own a stock Ae92 Corolla with a 4-AFE and I am thinking about fitting an air filter. What are the advantages/disadvantages of different types of aftermarket air filters and which one would be best for my engine?

get a pannel filter for $30 at repco, or a cheap pod filter for $30 also from supercheap
i put a pod filter on a 4afe and it sounded pretty heKtiC when accelerating to 6100rpm (rev limit)
only put a pod if u wanna make some fully sick sounds.... there is no real gain with a 4afe unless u get some extractors or exhaust but might as well get a 4age

i agree with rthy
no real point..but then again..if you bump up the timing a bit, pod filter or panel filter replacement, and some extractors/exhaust it would go alright!

I am in the process of getting a 2 inch exhaust system and i was told that extractors would be a waste of time. how would i change the timing? is this a professional job or can a 17 year old do it with a shifter??????

I slightly modified the timing on my 4K-C to run 98 octane fuel. Quite simple really, fill your tank with 98 octane, start your engine, undo a bolt right next to your dizzy, then slowly turn your dizzy (you will hear your idle speed increase, this can be turned down again with the idle screw), keep going until you hear your engine start pinging (exactly what it sounds like hhahah), then turn it back a bit.
Then give it a test drive, giving it all the thrashing you can give it. If you hear pinging, turn it down a bit again, if you don't, you've successfully modified your timing for 98 octane fuel and you should notice a slight power increase...

i recommend you don't do that
set timing to factory specs with a timing light.. then if you feel you want to go more, put an extra 2 degrees in at a time. drive up a steep hill at full noise and lower in the rpm range it will be more likely to ping...
easier to just leave it standard or near standard..
4AG stock exhaust manifolds are not bad. no point getting extractors if it is reasonably stock.
as for filters.. the best one is a clean one. no need to go crazy with pods or crappy K&N's,, just get a clean paper filter element and it will be more than you need.

True that, now that I think about it, I didn't care if the 4kc so much as detonated, if you want your engine to last, do what oldcorollas just said
