Stu, that's a conjunction.
The bright planet right beside the moon is Venus, the less bright planet just a little below is Jupiter. You can see one of Jupiter's moons pretty clearly with binoculars (10 x 50).

Yep the moon looked incredible last night! I could only see 1 bright planet very close to the moon, but I didnt realise there were 2 lined up with it... very cool

Unfortunately, the moon will have moved a considerable distance away from Venus and Jupiter tonight.

Shots with the moon need about 0.5 second exposure, whereas the planets will need longer times (I think - prepares to be shot down by Toymods' photographers).

Dave - Didn't think you were married mate? The wonders never cease......
and I would have thought you could have over cooked the moon and left the planets in some form of reasonable view?

My union could at best be described as "rocky"......
Using the puzzleman's pic (left to right):
Jupiter, star, Venus, moon.
The pic was taken tonight - last night the moon was very close to Venus, almost a grazing occultation.

It's called something that starts with "S" and has a "C" in it some where (by memory) but it temporarily escapes me.
