Blown headgasket on 3RZFE Sat, 10 September 2005 00:21 Go to next message
Hi everyone

Our Hilux (late 90's) with a 3RZFE 2.7l enginehas a blown headgasket between the water jacket and No2, and also No4 cylinders. Are their any known defects/faults etc that may have caused this? I know that there are many different possible causes for a blown headgasket, but i would like to know if there are any "usual suspects" on this engine type.

Thanks
Craig

No, no real weaknesses or common problems with these motors. Except for light piston slap on cold starts due to the different expansion rates of the the block vs. alloy pistons.

The only reason I can think of for the type of blow you had was extreme heat, is there any blueing of the cylinder walls or combustion chamber?

Did it overheat? A quick little check, throw the t-stat in a pot of water and bring it to a boil - see if it opens. If it doesn't that could be the problem.

I dont really know what happened, as it isnt my car. Its my mums truck, and she lives a fair way out on a property, so it does heaps of miles. Im pretty sure it was due to overheating, but my mum is pretty understanding with her cars (even used to race sports cars back in the day), so its not due to neglect, and it never consumed water until now, so I was looking for a component failure of some sort, either pump or thermostat as you suggest. The main failure is into No 2, but the fact that No4 has a failure as well (even though it is very small) suggests that the head has warped (rather than actually blowing out the gasket material), but I hav'nt taken the head off yet, so I cant be sure. Unfortunately Im back in Sydney now, so it will most likely have to be done by the local mechanic.
