Has anyone tried to capture a paused movie with this method?
I tried using the printscreen and paste (in photoshop) on a paused wmv and got a pretty odd result- the image is only there if the player is kept open and it cannot be edited. Anyone know a way around this, or a movie player with a capture function?

i had that problem but i cant remember how i overcame it. weird isnt it.
try using a player which has a 'save screenshot' or 'capture frame' feature. if its dvd you're talking about then there should be plenty of programs which have it (i know for a fact that nero showtime does).
hope this helps.

PS. you're making wallpaper from porn arent you jk

OMG you're right!
If you use Windows Media Player and use printscreen and open it MS Paint one of two things will happen:
1. If you pressed pause it will be blank.
2. If you pressed printscreen while it was playing (and it's still playing) it continues to play in the MS Paint window!!!
AHAHAHA mad
Anyway, to get around the problem use a different media player. I recommend Media Player Classic (mplayerc.exe). Search it on google. It plays so many files and responds better to plugins. Don't use Windows Media Player for anything -- it sux.
I didn't realise that problem existed because I use Media Player Classic
Probably got something to do with you not owning the copyrights to it so it won't let you take a screenie.

Thanks guys, I've just got a new laptop, so am currently stuck with media player. I had a player on my old pc that didn't need codecs but I can't remember the name of it to find it again.
I'll have a look for media player classic.

The movie problem is actually because movies play on "overlay", it basically plays directly to your video card and windows cannot register that it is even on the screen. To windows it just thinks the area is blank and transparent (Hence when you paste it into paint you can see right through it to the video window behind).
There are a few programs out there that can capture overlay, I used "Fraps".
Cheers,
Kev.

This man speaks the truth. Alternatively, a lot of players (I think even the latest WMP) will allow the use of VMR7 or VMR9 to pump the movie through the graphics pipeline of the card which is also capturable.

True that
Media player classic is one of the players that you can change the renderer on, search for Quicktime Alternative on google and you should find it .
