Mystery oil leak Sun, 11 September 2005 23:59 Go to next message
GDay,

There is an oil leak from my 4age and im buggered if i can find it. I pulled the sump off and resiliconed it, replaced the oil filter, replaced the rocker cover gaskets and the distributor O-Ring all with genuine Toyota parts, all this has reduced the size of the leak but im still dropping small patches of oil each night in the driveway.
Its an 87 ae82, big port, red top and the oil is leaking from the front of the engine on the drivers side, I can tell this because there is always a slight amount of oil that has accumulated on the bracket for the the air conditioner motor.

Any help??? Anyone had this problem before?

Cheers

Blayne

would it be anywhere near the dizzy?
Cause even tho you replaced the o-ring, on alot of 4AGE's the actual seals inside the dizzy are rooted and it will leak through the middle of the dizzy.
Do a search for "Incurable oil leaks" or something like that and you will find a helpful thread with pics and all about how to fix it yourself!
Hope that gets it!
Goodluck.

Yes, front main seal, oil pump seal, and rear main seals are also common leakers on motors.

cheers for the replies,

yeh i dont think its any of the main seals or oil pump as there is oil up higher on the outside of the engine than any of these, and also im pretty sure the dizzy is sweet because that little platform suspeneded below it had heaps of oil on it before i changed the O-Ring, i cleaned it and it has been spotless ever since, i was thinking the front cam seals at cylinder one end of the motor (timing belt end)

im on the case though, it should riase its ugly head when i pull the exhaust manifold and air con motor etc off and have a reall close look

cheers

blayne

Also check the seal around your oil pressure switch. Mine has just started leaking after i stuffed around with it all weekend while i was thinking about remote mounting sensors.

Needs some teflon tape

if you cant find it anywhere then i have heard you can add uv dye to your leaking liquid and use a uv light to check where the leaking source is at night.
