New Sport or Just for Idiots ?

Bonnet Surfing !
Not a new concept by any means but after a good feed and a late night the following prototype was created by a small group of us Toymodders.
A trip the next day to an undisclosed Large bush clearing saw about 2 hours prototype testing behind an unnamed Toyota Crown and an old Galant. To acheive the best feedback testing was carried out by 4 Pilots in appropriate safety gear. To ensure test pilots were of the highest standard all were Celica owners/Drivers ! .
First round of Testing proved it was basically stable to 60 KPH but some design flaws need to be rectified ! Work is now in progress for a two Seater version and an improved single seater after the initial prototype was rolled and written off ! (Note 60 KPH requires very Large Kahoonas and was only acheived on 1 Occasion )
Oh and in case you were wondering Yep its a TA22 bonnet and an RA23 seat ! (wasn't a bad bonnet either but the sacrafice was oh so worth it !)
Disclaimer - DO NOT try this at home ! All testing carried out by trained idiots who will remain basically nameless.

Yeap..... Just for idiots!!
Though I will give "some" credit to whoever was doing it in that you were not actually on the bonnet of a moving car, rather being towed on a bonnet!
Did you think about what would happen if the car had to brake suddenly?? Bonnets I suspect slide over gravel pretty good I would imagine..... who want's to look at your diff that close??, or have their nose replaced by a tow ball?

We used to use those truck mud gaurds, the big plastic ones. Being 5mm from the ground macking it round is shit loads of fun. Going round a corner is the best, you pick up some good speed and have to hold on for your life.

that's right... that's what the girlfriend/wife is for
that sounds GREAT! my closest to coming off at 60km/hr was on a suicide billy cart.. made it up out of scraps lying around. at 45km/hr one of the front wheels came off... you can guess what happened
I'm up for a ride on either the 1 or 2 seater. and as a former celica now supra driver, I claim superiority over the celica drivers *waits for the sh*tfight to erupt*

My suggestion to avoid sudden close-ups of the diff (or being stabbed by the towbar) would be to use a solid tow "rope", possibly made from a broomstick or something. Then when the car brakes u can push against it to slow down, without the sudden stop (you know, the real killer on/off our roads)

Except if the car stops REALLY suddenly and you get impaled on the broomstick...

Matress surfing
Warning 7 or so megs and streaming.
Er, a big no to the broomstick. I don't think my obituary should read death by broomstick impalement whilst bonnet surfing.

I'd have to agree with that... broomstick would be... unpleasant.
especially if it slipped and ruptured a spleen/appendix.

Maybe after a few more mods, we could end up with the broomstick attached to the bonnet and the seat can have a working seatbelt....
And maybe a Type-R sticker or two...

I think with the current design I'd prefer to be thrown clear than to be strapped into that thing.
just need some motorcylcle leathers, or at the least some wrist, knee and elbow guards (and, of course, a crash helmet)

We got a HZ Kingswood bonnet they're pretty good and one of those little plastic seats that they had at school.
The other one was an international truck bonnet, you know like those old solid tray dodge trucks... they weren't so good coz if you leant forward the front of the bonnet would dig into the ground and throw you off.
I remember one night we had a Toyota troopcarrier, a four wheel motorbike towing someone and an old paddock bred commodore towing someone else.
The guy behind the four wheeler was sliding sideways at one point. He bailed and the bonnet slid underneath the troopcarrier.
We got it on video but it's too dark to see much of anything.

If you are doing it somewhere were you may have to brake all of a sudden then your pretty dumb.
Make rope longer. And use your feet to stop.
Maybe patch up any sharp bits of metal.
Should take it on the beach and tow it in the shallow water.
Just don't loss it.

Yeah and while you're at the beach you should take a inner tube from a big tractor tyre.
You go up the top of the dunes and sit in it and roll down. We did it in the forest once but it would be good on the dunes (no obstacles!).
I was supposed to stop the tyre at the bottom of the hill... but by the time it got to me it was going too fast... I did slow it down some though... anyway he hit a big gum tree his head just touched the tree through the inner tube and bounced out of the tyre... he said the bit that hurt the most was hitting the ground when he bounced out. But great fun!!
That was about four years ago... still, can't wait to go and do it again sometime... now he's designing these turbo ford things.

Did anyone try to do this bonnet surfing last night ??
I just heard reports on the radio that someone from northern Sydney is now in hospital from this kind of activity. I sure hope it wasn't any Toymodders (or anyone else really).

How big is the risk of the sled going in nose first and flipping over.
Was it a problem.?

The broomstick idea doesn't sound to good to me I'm afraid ! We use a long rope about 6 metres long and gloves, Goggles and Helmet are a must.
The area is Huge so absolutely no need for sudden breaking and headbutting the diff. By mounting the seat at the back there is no real chance of the front digging in altho we had it dig in twice whilst going sideways on Dave ! The first time he found a trench the second time was exiting the large puddle we were flicking each other into. As long as you really lean into the corners you are pretty right.
mmm Safe... Nah prolly not but we are being as careful as you can and still actually do it. We have a Early Landcruiser Bonnet lined up for the second prototype but it won't fit in the back of the wagon so I need some roof racks first !
Yeah rocks can be a bastard but most of the time we stick to the grassy spots, you slide better there too but when you here them bouncing off your helmet and watch them hitting your Goggles it a wierd feeling !
And as for cleaning the bonnet.... Kinda not required when the steel actually wears away ! After an hour and a half or so things are pretty thin and Kindy holey.
Once again not a sport I recommend you try at home
