4age compression check

Hey guys - I was wondering if any of you have taken the engine oil filler cap off when the car is idling. My car seems to have a shit load of air coming from there, and oil leaks around the rocker cover seal. I know this is probably from the blow by gases but it seems excessive. I did a compression check and the first 2 cylinders were 225Psi each and the second 2, 200 psi each. The first 2 are above what the manual suggests (carbon build up??). Do these motors have a tendancy to blow headgaskets?
Thanks

Generally they dont blow a head gasket unless they have been badly neglected or abused, the 4A is quite a strong package, however oil leaks around the rocker cover are fairly common and can be easily fixed by replacing the rubber seals.
The 4AG's do get quite a bit of blow by as they age although youre compression does seem a bit higher than the norm, just make sure theres no signs of a blown gasket or gas leak to the radiator and that the oil is regularly changed..if youre not having any problems and the cars running fine then I wouldnt worry too much about the high numbers.

Realisticaly, alot of engines have about 150psi or 1000Kpa. If all 4 are that value, its a good motor. Your text book may say about 170psi for a new motor, and minimum of 145psi for a old motor. Many motors will run happy at 120psi, as long as all cylinders are worn evenly.
It is unusual to get a reading higher than the manual says, unless you have rebuilt with higher static compression. Check your gauge again.

A little off topic but what is a compression tester worth? Can you use them on engines that have the spark plugs down long tubes? Like the 2T and late model 3S?

My Kinchrome tester was about $95, and came in a case with adapters to fit down any plug tube. I had to have the gauge replaced a few times under warrantee. A compression test is the quickest way to determine how much a job is going to cost the customer, and should be included in every "tune up". Every mechanic needs one.
