Gday again,
I posted a thread a few weeks ago where i mentioned that i have an ae82, (87 corolla) that has a cracked head gasket & that I was going to use a bit of chemiweld to try and fix it. well ive done that & its now driving really well, although it seems to be still going threw a bit of water.
So im going to change the head gasket so i figured id see about getting a mechanic to do it for me, (save myself the grief) he qouted me around $600 to do it saying that to change the head gasket with this car you need to get the head machined at the same time.
I wasnt sure if this is right or if this guy is just trying to get money for nothing.
Does any one out there know if this is right or not?
Thanks in advance.

There is a better than average chance that the head will need machining. If the gasket is blown, there is probably some surface damage, or the head may be slightly warped.

if i was going to the trouble of pulling the head off to replace a blown gasket i'd machine the head at the same time, just to make sure its square, otherwise you'll blow another gasket.
600 sounds about right to me when u factor in time*rate say std mechanic rate 85-100/hr. changing a head gasket and machining or decking the head would take best part of a day i would have thought
cheers,
