w58, r154 & the Getrag Fri, 16 September 2005 22:23 Go to next message
Hi Guys was wondering if anyone can help me out,

Ive made up engine mounts and a gearbox crossmember to put a 2jzge/w58-5speed into my 260z,

Just say at some later date i decided i wanted to install a
1jzgte, would my engine mounts (the ones i made to put the 2jzge into the 260z) still work with the 1jzgte engine???

Or,

If i wanted to use a different gearbox with the 2jzge, like the r154 or the Getrag, would my gearbox crossmember still work???

your 2JZ-GE mounts will work fine on the 1JZ-GTE (turbo etc clearances permitting).

You will need a different gearbox crossmember if you change from a W58 to a R154 or V160/1 (as well as other work I suspect due to the large size increase in them!).

Cheers

I know they are fatter, much fatter, but the gearbox mounts of the Getrag and the w58 from behind a 2jz looked really similar to me, and they both go in the same car,

How different can they be???

Honestly I don't know exactly how different they are, but to be honest I suspect the gearbox crossmember will be the least of your worries if you decide to convert from a W58 to a V160/1 Smile

The sheer dimensions of the gearbox are on a whole new scale in comparison to a W58 Smile

They are about the same width.
But the V160 is about 2-3 inches taller, and the width goes back longer (if that last bit made sense)

please excuse the OT, but i think it could be good if one toymods meet, we could get a lineup of all the different gearboxes around.... from early K's to the getrags.. and get pics to show the size differences between them....

just a thought..

Didn't Nick or Stenno have a nice pic on www.turbosupras.com with all the Getrag measurements? I just remember the Getrag being a fuckload taller than the other boxes and more bulky along its whole length.
There is also an old pic with the comparative dimensions of the W58 and R154.

The 3 gearboxes are suffieciently different such that I could only imagine you would need to make a significant modification to the tunnel to fit a V160/1 compared to a W58. The Xmember may not need that much modification to work. Of course, I haven't done it so I can't be 100% sure.

as I remember, Zed tranny tunnels are a bit on the small side, so best be handy with a rather large hammer Razz

Hey Norb, did you figure out something for the shifter position? Because the w58 shifter is about 6 inches further foreward than the Getrag! I'm really curious what you came up with!

[edit] I find the shifter sits a little too far foreward in the MA61, so I'd like to move it back myself too.

Nothing has been figured out yet. The Getrag is sitting on my garage floor looking big and heavy - and it will remain there until my uber tractor motor is built for the Celica, which should be some time in 2012.
