I am looking for a new TV for the living room.
Any suggestions ?
Rear projection
Flat
Flat-wide
Plasma (yeah right)
Whats the best to get and why and what do you have and what did you pay ?
(I personally find the rear projections a little, hmmm hard to watch ? i.e. to much light reflects off it or someshit ? I dunno)

I've got to say I was in Bing Lee not long ago and was comparing all the wide screen flat screens side by side, and I think the Philips had the best picture, by a long shot. I'm not sure of the exact model tho.

This really depends on what your going to be using it for and the available space you have.
If your hooking it up to a DVD player then a Widescreen would be a big plus. If not it would still be good but not as necessary.
There are a few cheap widescreens now availiable for under $1000 but they are not flat screen. and they tend to be fairly small.
Rear Projection is definelty the cheapest way to get as big as possible screen but the quality can be inferior and generally only perform at their best in a darkend room. ie not your living room.
Plasma screens are really just a wet dream. I mean this is a toyota forum, not a Merc or Jag one.
If you go to buy a Flat screen CRT TV take a laser pointer with you.
To test if it is actually flat, shine the laser pointer at the the screen holding the laser perpendicular to the screen. The light should reflect straight back at you. If it doesn't then it isn't a true flat screen, probably just a regular one behind a flat peice of glass.
The only True Flat screen TV's (not counting some of the really expensive ones) that I've seen where a Sony and a Philips, all others where just BS.
Digital TV is pretty much Crap as you described it. It was a flop in every other country they tried it in, way before Australia. If you want HDTV then get a set top box, as the format changes so frequently at least with a set top box you don't have to replace your whole tv, just get the box updated.

Nothing short of a plasma screen (hideously expensive and lasts only 5 years) can match a 100Hz CRT.
I don't like rear projection TVs. You sacrifice too much clarity for the size.
When I saw channel 9 on HDTV, I nearly wet my pants. It was AWESOME! Absolutely amazing! I've never seen anything from a CRT so crisp, not even when watching DVDs.
Buying a set top box will only allow you to get the HDTV channels, but you're missing out on the rest of the experience.
The fact that the TVs need to be so good to handle HDTV is why they are so pricey.
Go have a watch of HDTV on a proper HDTV TV and you'll be floored like I was...

WHAT about DVD players ? would u guys stray from the Sony's, Philips, Panasonic etc ? to get the cheapo brands ? or just pay the extra to get the quality DVD players ?

When I said HDTV is crap I wasn't talking about the quality.
I've wathced it before on a $30000 LCD projector and I was absolutely amazed too.
Its just I don't think its going to take off hear.... hasn't anywere else.
I think its just too expensive for the people that it appeals to.

Les, stay with the known brands. They have better decoders, better everything really...
And, yeah, HDTV is High Definition TV.
HDTV might succeed if the government wasn't intent on playing its games........
The thing is that it's intent on killing standard TV by 2006 (I think) and forcing the move to HDTV by that time.
Not sure if it'll eventuate though.

From the DBA FAQ:
What are High Definition (HD) pictures?
HD pictures have image resolution which is superior to SD pictures and to the existing analog, with up to six times the improvement in detail.
The minimum HD picture resolution is be 576 lines x 720 pixels @ 50Hz progressive (576p).
This means that the benefits of HD pictures are particularly noticeable on larger screen sets and when using projection equipment.
HD pictures are also ghost free and in widescreen format. When viewed on an HDTV screen the viewer can enjoy cinema-quality viewing with Dolby surround sound.
In August 2002, the Government announced that it will seek to change each broadcaster's obligation to broadcast HD programs to an annualised requirement of 1040 hours, including advertisements, and that these obligations will commence from 1 July 2003 or two years after the commencement of digital transmissions in an area. Programs transmitted in High Definition will also be simultaneously broadcast in Standard Definition.
The HD integrated television receiver (HDTV) or the HD set top box (HD-STB) are expected to cost more than SD integrated television receivers (SDTV) or the SD set top box (SD-STB).

I don't know if it's just me but the picture on plasma screens looks shitty! Like a bad DIVx or something, the solid colours sometimes seem to be alive and the colour edges seem to jump a bit too, were they just cheap ones I've seen (although one was $20000).

the LG rear projection tvs are extreemly great bang for buck i was very impressed!!! and they are well priced and picture quality way outperformed my expectations
i've got a standard 68 panasonic which is nice but when we get dvd's and the sun goes down down comes the project screen... if you getting a projector do yourself a favour and get yourself a DLP one it is really good LCD ones just dont cut it

you already have explained it, it IS crap.
Just another way of tv companies trying to get everyone to buy new tv's and new technology, it isn't that much better, and the added price tag is crap. what makes them worth more than a analog tv? Just like the $700 price tag on PS2s when they first come out, now there selling at almost half the price, why? did they become cheaper to make??????? no.
