alright my TA22 is mucking around just in time for me to sell it, i want to fix it though. Here's what it's doing, hopefully one of you guys will know what's the go, hopefully it's something simple like a loose earth or something. Here's the symptoms:
1. Intermmitently it has this "tantrum" where seemingly all the wiring goes haywire, except the car still goes fine.
2. The lights turn off, the wipers don't work, i don't think the vent fan works (not sure about that one) and the fuel and water guages both go crazy, the needles just climb straight off the top of the gauge.
3. as well as these probs, the tacho only reads roughly the actualy revs, and it's all floppy all over the place.
4. The indicator 'arrows' on the dash jam-on as well as the blue high beam light, however they aren't on outside the car.
5. the speedo is fine
6. If i want the wipers to work, i have to turn them on on the dash, turn the lights on, and hold back the high-beam flasher for the wipers to work.
7. for the lights to work, i have to turn on the wipers and the lights, then flash the highbeams once to get the lights on. however when i indicate the headlights flash! (indicators work though)
8. Recently the lights have just been turning off by themselves and even if i flash the highbeams to bring them back on they go straight off again.
9. somehow the vent fan is also connected to this
10. when the lights are off but it is in it's mucking around stage (you can tell when the highbeam and indicators jam on the dash) if i turn the wipers on, the dash lights come on! but the wipers don't work haha unless i hold the highbeams on... you get the picture, it's pretty stuffed.
Any help will be GREATLY appreaciated!
André

Almost certainly a bodgy earth somewhere. Make sure you have a good solid earth from the battery to the chassis, and the battery to the engine. Also make sure the earth points under the dash are properly secured and aren't corroded etc.

Thanks heaps for that, now that i know it's definately an earth, i can start putting more effort into finding which one exactly it is! Who knows where the under-dash earth is? I've checked the boot earth, the engine-to-battery and engine-to-chassis, but still can't find anything Anyone who can tell me where to look will be in my good books lol.
Thanks guys
Andre

I had that problem of the guages going through the roof i think from memory it ended up being some top notch wiring that some bright spark thought he'd make better. Problem was that he didnt take out any of the old stuff and it kept going to ground and because the fuel and temp guages are resistance types there was no resistance. It will ruin your guages if not fixed as i went through a cluster.

Fuck me that's going to be a pain in the ass to fix...
My old celica manual has been left in the rain a few too many times so I no longer have a chassis wiring diagram to look at, how many earth points are under there? (the dash I mean) first try to find an earth wire in the loom and earth it well somewhere (so that you don't have to pull apart the dash yet...) You could try that first. It'll prob. be black or white-black...

also replace all the fuses.. dont check just replace they cost nothing anyway. I had a problem like this and it ended being a fuse that had an intermediate fault and would open circuit but then you bang it(bumps in the road) it'd change.

i have the wiring diagrams for RA23/28 celics, but i dont think these work on TA22's
earth wire will most CERTAINLY be White w/black stripe
on the RA28, the dash earth is behind the speedo and tacho guages on the underside of the metal dash frame. Dunno about the TA22.
I would also be inclined to clean all connections to eliminate corrosion and excessive resistance
