I had the same problem some years back with a V8 LH hatchback then an LX V8, its damn hard to see you need a mirror and a light and you get down low on the side of the block (in the grease and goo) looking for letters about 20-30mm high cast into the block about the sump - and of course I couldn't find either.
Had to presume both were 253, pity, a 308 isd worth plenty more, especially in a Torana !
Must be an easiet way.

Well, if the motor is original, you can tell simply by the carb - far as I know, all 253's had that rotten, rotten 2 barrel strommy, and 308s had the quadrajet. You can also tell by the sound of the engine, if you hang around Holden folk much - they do tend to sound notably different.

Yeah thats right, pain in the arse. Maybe look at the compliance plate, look at the engine number and try and match the start of it with 253 or 308 or something like that, that would bew the easiest way, if u knew wat u were looking for

1. drive them off a cliff
2. watch them sink to the bottom of the ocean
3. ??????
4. GETATOYOTA
joking! I agree with mrshin. if u don't wanna deal with the factory installed goo/oil/crap on the side of the engine, check the carbs. You don't even need to pull the air filter off.
As for REALLY gutless, my Dad's HZ with built 253 shat on his HQ 308...

An easy check is to look at the I.D. plate on the firewall. HQ series 308's had an engine prefix L31. 253's prefix was L32. Then the later 308's in the torana and HJ-HZ was L34. Of course this information is useless if the engine has been swapped. In any case remove a spark plug and manually crank the motor measuring the stroke from top dead centre to bottom dead centre . 308's had longer of the two.

VH came with 253 and 308, I had one :/, spent money on it, it got stolen, I think it was for the best.
The VH will probably have 4.2 or 5.0 stamped on it? I never looked at mine, but I know the VC I had, it had 3.3 stamped on it, while my mates HQ had 202.

You can pretty much tell the difference in the sound of the motors, not at idle so much, but when you give it abit..
*puts flame suit on*
seriously though. you can hear the difference, the 253 tends to have less of a rumble, its not as deep sounding. sounds more like a big 6cyl with an exhaust/extractors.
