Hid technical info Thu, 22 September 2005 15:38 Go to next message
I am aware that 5800-6000k (white) is the ideal temp for best vision on the road. Now I know when u go up in temp the colour goes fromw white to blue to purple. Some newer cars have a purple look from the hid's but I find it hard to beleive the car company put higher k globes and would sacrifice the comfort in driving just to add a cool look. So if I am right and the purple looking light is still 5800-6000k, how do they get that effect?
Any ideas guys?

most globes here in japan go for whiter and crap but are terrible for driving....

i went back to philips Plus 60's instead of the.... PIAA Xtreme White.. sure they were whiter, but i couldn't see shit Razz

many many japanese things are for the cool look, instead of the functionality...

all i can say is, go for a drive with different globes and see how they look.

maybe u are Laughing
u didnt ask if anyone cared so i did, why do u need a road like day at night...its wat those white and red things are, tells u where ur meant to be going...word from the not so wise to the even less wise Smile

the problem with lights that make the road look like day is that u lose ur night vision in any other area, and u limit ur vision range to how far your lights travel

oh and btw i love how u show how great your new lights are in a street with street lights...bit of forethought needed.

sorry to pick on u mate, but im tired and should go to bed, but i cant sleep so im shitty Smile

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/idmorfe1/145727521kCBJPJ_ph.jpg

my issue really with my HIDs is that I cant focus it farther to see more of the road suface but the light just bounces upward and show more of the street signs

I obviously dont need the road like day but why have electric windows? SOmethin called comfort Wink
I live in a suburban area so the darkest place I could take the pic is in a side street and it was pretty dark still and I parked far from the street lights. It still shows what I wanted to show. You can see the patch of the road without the light on it is pretty dark.
No need to say sorry for picking on me ... just dont do it would be easier Razz

Btw the guy with the above post. Your headlight reflector and shape wasnt designed for hid's. I just got lucky that I got a good beam, u werent so lucky. You would need custom headlights.

i'm saying that companies DEFINITELY choose the cool look over functionality. the perception is that the higher K globes are better, and so car companies cater to the wants of the market.

as for H4's, i was meaning that out of ALL the H4's available aftermarket here, there were only abotu 2 or 3 types i would consider buying.

the same goes for HID, aftermarket caters to the markets wants, not to what is actually useful.

if you are happy with yours then good.

your question was, how do the manufacturers gut the blue/purple at the same K? they don't, they sacrafice light quality for the look. that said, they are likely still better than the "normal" H4's..

you need light at night to se. human eyes are not designed for darkness, especially at high speed. i prefer daylight colour globes as opposed to white, as i feel i can see more. this is whiter than normal globes, but not as white as HID typically.

night vision, bah.. night vision is nowhere near as good as day vision Razz tell me that you prefer driving with your lights off and i'll tell you what you are Razz

you eem to misunderstand the point of headlights and have not contributed anything to this thread. Rolling Eyes

Thx corolla.
Btw, most cars with hid's do look white and only give purple on certain angles which is caused by the magnifying glass. You are probably right. Most ppl choose their car by its look anyway.

WYSIWYG- Can u post a pic like I have done in a dark street?

Cheers

Shai

Re: Hid technical info Fri, 23 September 2005 16:39 Go to previous message
projector headlight <> HID. what i want is superwhite headlights that provides light to the left and right front side of the car - kinda like a 'snowplow' look on the pavement Smile
my whole HID system came from my A4, the headlight on A4s can use halogen or HID bulbs but youre going need another set of driving lights to project light sideways

Most projector headlights have clear outer lenses, because it doesnt need it to refract/deflect the light. as for the modern clear headlights, they started using 'diamond cut' (LOL) reflector blocks(the silver plating) to refract the light. you can see this quite pronounced in my pic
technically the HID bulb is just a single filament bulb...and omnidirectional - meaning it doesnt block highbeam light - thats the job of the projector headlight assembly unlike when using halogen bulbs where high/low beams are different filaments and you pick which one to use. I modified my headlight assembly to block high beams so I can use HIDs without blinding oncoming traffic
althought the projector beam lens acts as a prism, most of the purple color comes from the tint in the bulb. mine has some blue-purple thinger inside while my OE bulbs has something yelowish. they are undoubtedly purple during startup and becomes whiter as it heats up
i'll try to get a pic of the nasty beam pattern once I put my car back together and find a suitable venue
later
