1J Problems..!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I have a 1j in a boat, I'm starting to get the bugs out one by one, my problem now is with it get to 4000-4500rpm and is starting to make boost,( I have had it rev to 6000rpm, but you have to feather the throttle a little) starts to miss under throttle, I've checked the map, computer, igniter on a car all is fine, put new plugs in as well, turnt the boost up to 14 psi, and down to 6 psi) As with may race boats ( and ones I've had in the past)I dont use a alternator,, could it be that I am not getting enough power for the spark plugs once it's under boost???, ie, 12.5 volts, as apposed to around 14.5 with an alternator, we were going to try unpluging the alternater fuse in a friends Supra to see how it would run, but we couldn't get it out, nor get to the alternater to unplug it there,
Thank's in Advance!
Dave

If you dont have enough voltage that could certainly be the problem. Misfiring exactly as you put it.
How are you cooling the engine? Not using a heat exchanger into the sea water are you? (This could also be your problem if you are)

Dave, I think not having the voltage at a nominal 13.5 volts (due to no alternator) could be causing all sorts of problems from poor spark to insufficient fuel pressure. As with most conversion problems it is difficult to say exactly what the cause may be. As you have already eliminated other potential problems such as fuel surge and alike I suggest the alternator is the next step.
By the way, Tim sent me some photos of the zoom shoot. Should make for a great read.

Thanks for the replies!
Paul, it has a water pick-up and it pumps straight through the engine, most raceboats of this kind use the same set-up, and the engine is very well flushed with fresh water at the end of the day while the engine is still warm, I had a 502 ci chev with aluminum heads and after pulling it down , there was never any prob's, the boat is only in the water for a small amount of time, and you adjust the temperature with a valve
Grant:
I was going to give you a call on this one, and to keep you up to date with it all, but I don't have your phone #, I was going to call Tim tomorrow and get it of him, I'm a bit cramped for room for a 1j alternator, so I'll do the rounds at the wreckers and see if I can find something little, or maybe a motorbike one might be the go!, also can a alternator spin either way?, that might make it easier to fit if it does!!
Regards
Dave

Hi,
I done the rounds at the wreckers( Car, outboard, and Bike)today, I managed to get an alternator off a RB Gemini, it's fairly small, so it fitted up easy,, I'll give it a go over the next couple of days and see how it goes!
Regards

Dave,
i'm not getting at the rust/oxidisation issue with using sea water. Get your voltage up firstly to 14.1v. Your ignition timing will be dramatically off and it will run rich as the processor speed for the computer is running slower, hence your injector pulse widths are longer than they should be. The computer would recognise the low voltage anyway and turn on the engine check light. Do you have one hooked up?
Back to the water issue, the 1jz and all injected Toyota engines need a water temperature of between 86-90deg celcius. Old holdens run around 72deg celcius, it might have been fine for your 502ci engine but the water "could" be too cold for the engine to ever get out of warmup mode. This would decrease ignition timing and increase fuel injection dramatically and may be what you are seeing. How hot does she run?
Also what computer are you running?

G'day Guy's
Paul.
thanks for your input, I don't have a engine check light on it, though I will have soon, it runs around 80deg's c that the moment ( all though I can change the temperture up-or down if I have to via a valve on the water flow) I'm running the factory computer, which is out of a manual supra.
Grant,
Now I got your phone number I'll drop you a line , I have the alternator on and I should have it out before the weekend, to elminate one more thing!
Thank's
Dave
