2tgteu or 4agte?? i cant decide Mon, 26 September 2005 11:58 Go to next message
hey guys, just wanting some suggestions on what motor i am going to build for my ae71 corolla.

It is already set up and running a 2tgeu N/A carb motor in it that is in need of a rebuild, currantly to call the car "finished" i would need a t-18 radiator and gearbox as atm i am running a celica box witch is f#*ked and its shifter position is all wrong anyway and an unknown radiator.

If i was to go with the 2tgteu i would purchase an efi 2tg, strip it and reco it using a 3t crank and descent pistons that will hold boost, descent head gaskit, turbo manifold, etc etc and my t3 nissan turbo.

if i was to go the other way i would need, a 4age out of corolla at wreakers for 350 with comp and loom, strip this down and reco using standard everything except pistons,, mani, turbo, cut & shut intake eetc etc, my issue with this is i need to go back to 4a setup in my car, eg: ae71 x-member, t50 box, radiator, tailshaft, engine mounts, and i hear people saying that the 4ag's are extremely lacking in the torque region and i am looking for a good all round motor that is fairly capeable down low and down right scary once it comes on song

i am more inclined at this stage to go with the 2tg simply because of the fact my car is set up for it and i am extremely impressed with the out put of even my clapped out, untuned 2tg and am imagining tyre shreding performance from a 1.8 fuel injected version with boost???? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
what do u reckon pple, tell me ur thoughts, ask me ur questions..
thanks in advance tim

Hi,

How come you have a 2TGEU with carbs? It should be EFI.

EFI won't give you more power. If you have a nice set of carbs and they are properly tuned by someone who knows what they're doing, then you'll be perfectly fine for normal driving.

The 2TGEU is a better candidate for a turbo than a 2TG, due to the lower compression of the 2TGEU.

If you want max N/A power, then go for your old stock 2TG with carbs. It's a lovely engine.

nah bro, i think u missed the point, i wanna build an efi turbo motor, i cant decide weather to go with the 2tgteu( a hybrid turbo motor made from an efi 2tgeu with a turbo strapped on) or a 4agte ( also a hybrid usually made from 4agze with the supercharger ripped off and a turbo instead, in my case i will start with a 4age, slap some new bearings in her and a set of descent pistons) u see im not trying to choose between the 2tg and 2tgeu, its between the 4age and the 2tgeu!! Wink Wink
reality is that carbs will only stay in tune for so long and thats where efi wins out!! but couldnt agree more that the 2tg carb motor is awsome for what it is. thanks river
come to think of it i am even considering building a nicely warmed over n/a 2tg, maybe a balanced and lightened bottom end (fnt pulley to clutch), balanced & shot peened rods, weight matched pistons, shaved, recoed, ported, polished head, nice extractors, and maybe efi or carbs.

as u can see my mind needs to be made, help with my descision guys, i wanna hear personal experiences and what not cos i want whatever happens to happen soon
cheers tim

If you had an earlier model corolla, like a KE 30 I'd say 2TGTEU / 3T Hybrid straight away, but I love old school stuff. But reality is they are getting on in the years, and there is a bit of weight in them. You can still get decent power out of them, and good amounts of torque.

The 4AGTE would be a nice light engine that will improve your handling a bit. Don't quote me on this, I'm not a 4AGE expert, but converting it to a 4AGE should be pretty easy - I think you can just get a new cross member to suit, and a T50 to suit, however the T50 may not last long behind a turbo. So adapter plates / bellhousing might be needed for a W** box, compared to the 2T which is a bolt up job.

PS - I've got the 2TGEU, 3T crank, EFI, turbo manifold for sale. Selling cause I want a rotary.

Supposedly if you already have a T series engine in the car then the 4ag should be able to go straight in. I have read that the t series crossmember allows fitment of the 4age. (at least in a KE70)

Also if you are fitting a 3t crank in a 2t block don't you need to remove some material from the block to allow the swing of the (larger) crank? Maybe it is only the earlier 2T's that need to be modified...
