Petrol octane levels Sat, 04 January 2003 11:42 Go to next message
Just wondering what levels of octane each of the premium petroleums contain.

Vortex
Optimax
Synergy 8000
Ultimate

im finding vortex to be the best bang for a buck atm.

although i havent tried ultimate yet.

Vortex is the only one that doesn't have a higher octane than regular PULP. The rest are all 98 ron while vortex is 96 or so with "detergents" and such.

I prefer ultimate, but won't go past synergy or optimax.

dude, vortex is by far the most seriously SHITHOUSE fuel, stand alone, let alone compared to the other v.good fuels mentioned above. dump it ASAP.

IMHO BP ultimate is the best, follwed by Synergy 8000, then optimax a distant 3rd

I've always used BP Ultimate in my RA60. I wound some timing into her to suit, now shes a much nicer car to drive.

My contacts in the petrol industry have led me to believe that BP Ultimate and Optimax are exactly the same fuel.

Something to do with both being supplied by the same refinery (Caltex???)

Anyway.... unless your car is tuned to use the extra octane it will make jack all difference to performance, may impact on economy but thats about it.

this topic has been done to death here, and on several other forums.

the ducks nuts of it (if i recall correctly) is that they are NOT the same fuel, and not from the same refinery.

a quick drive on a tank of both would tell you this anyway.

and anyway, of course no fuel is going to give you more perofrmance unless you tune for it... thats the whole point!

std unleaded = knock sensor = less hp on the dyno
optimax= emv happy = 15 more kw at the rw

couldnt believe it myself but the dyno gave all the answers

146.1 rwkw on std
162.5 on optimax

or maybe the knock sensor was just a happy chappy that day Confused

Thats on a Soarer with a knock sensor though.....

If you run Regular unleaded it will retard the timming to reduce pinging.

So realisticly your not actually gaining 15kw by using Optimax... Your loosing 15Kw by using Regular.

I think in a Rolla you'd be lucky to make 1kw more with premium of any kind unless you advance your timing to suit.

I find that 2 or 3 tanks or optimax and my engine feels more slugish. But then i put a tank or ultimate through it and it feels great again.
My car idles better too with the higher octane stuff.
