3S-GE ? Mods

Hi guys,
I have a question.
I have an ST184 Celica with a 3S-GE engine (in the UK). It had bout 153 bhp as I am aware at the mo. I know this engine is lauded as one of the greatest ever, and I believe it, trust!!
What I am wondering, is how much difference is it going to REALLY make putting on a new air intake, exhaust etc. (i.e the usual mods people SEEM to start off with) See at the mo, I dont have acres of money so any mods I make I want them to be effective. The main reason this has become a concern now is cuz my Bird just bought a new Mini and I drove it today, and BOY does that thing go nicely But I love my baby Celica. At the moment, standard figures for the Mini n the Celica still show the Celica kicking ass, BUT I MUST do this comprehensively so I have finally decided to get on with some mods. Trouble is, everyone seems to suggest Air filter and Exhaust to start with. Is it really gonna make any difference, or should I save my spondoolicks for more useful mods later? What bout spark plugs and ignition leads, I read something about them also, but I dunno how much diff its all really gonna make.
I thought about looking into supercharging, but I am not sure where to look for info on that, and what kinda money am I looking at?
Hope someone can help me
Thanx

Yeah definetly look into at GTE conversion but it will cost alot.
If you are to do the exhaust don't just stick a noisy muffler on. As cool1 said make sure you get the whole lot.... ie extractors.
In my opinion, and there are articles to support this, Pod style air filters don't really increase performance.
the factory Toyota filters perform very well. Just make sure you change them frequently (once a year depending on your mileage).
Pod filters will remove the air box which acts like a resonator and give you an induction type sound but not much else.

I dont think that a GTE conversion would cost to much! Jap cars and parts are cheaper than chips in the UK

They may seem that way.... but remember your paying in pounds which is slightly less than $3/pound.
And while the pound is worth more than the AU$ the buying power is much worse. ie a can of coke cost ~1 pound in the UK.
So you pay through the roof for things like labour. I'm not to sure about jap parts though.

Jap car parts are real cheap there! probably the second cheapest place in the world! They just go through so many cars there because of all the snow causing crashes and rust!

Seeing as you have a U.K. version you are probably running 10:1 compression, meaning that the extra flow from a 2.5 inch exhaust is probably going to be a reasonably effective method of getting more power. Put a pod filter and a free(r) flowing exhausdt (even extractors) preferably 2.5 inch all the way through (incl. hi flow cat) would probably get you a healthy 10-15 hp extra if you also dyno tuned it for the better flowing system.
I have no idea how much this would cost you in the UK.

Boys,
Thanx. U have really been helpful, cheers dudes, now I have a good starting point to work from.
10-15hp just from the exhaust sounds like a good investment.
I would consider the GTE Conversion, but thing is I will no way be able to insure it over here, not ithout paying mo money than I got right now;)
Thanx again boys,

For a 2 litre NA engine 2.5inch is fine....of course, not for a completely stock standard one. If you are running higher compression and a higher flow head or a wicked cam, then the extra flow of a 2.5 exhaust is always handy, extractors are always good. As much as standard "headers" are good, I've never really thought of them as being up to scratch. Depends though - just my 2 cents.
