Alternative Medicine/My encounter with a gas bottle Fri, 30 September 2005 01:27 Go to next message
Ok I am starting this thread firstly to vent some of my frustration but secondly to ask peoples opinion on alternative medicine.

Last weekend I had a gas BBQ cylinder blow up in my face causing medium dense(2nd degree) burns to my face and arm.Not to mention a nice bit of shrapnel in my leg.

After 5 days in ICU and various treatments im trying to forget about,it looks like I will have no major scarring at all Smile

Now what has shit me to tears is my bloody tripper hippy relos trying to tell the doctors how to do their job. For the first few days my friends and relatives had to endure endless miraculous recovery storys of using urine to treat everything from my burns to cancer, followed by the need to prepare the fruit and veg a certain way to ensure their healing energies arnt lost before they are induced.

Now let me first start by saying I am a big believer in natural medicines and also see the corruption behind some of the big pharmaceutical companies and the decisions they make based on profit rather than health but FFS it all gets a bit much when to treat a burn you are expected to trek to the Himalayas to shave the balls of the sacred goat whilst catching the first teer of a new born baby born under the glow of a full moon Very Happy

This is a pic of me finally being able to breath, shit and piss on my own for the first time in 5 days.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/riceburna73/mehospital.jpg

So what are some of the other funny/rediculous alternative medicenes you have heard of?

Glad to hear your getting better. My auntie is a bit on the nutty side.

Anyway not sure whats she takes but she has a icecream container full of all these weird and wonderful "alternative" medicine pills. She also goes on weird diets etc and has now stopped talking to us for like a year cos she hasn't been taking her proper meds for her condition.

Another note good old Barry Sheene tried the natural way to beat cancer he died within months and had a much better chance if he had of accepted conventional medical treatment but refused.

Holy crap dude! Looks like you are lucky to still have your eyes in working order Shocked

Alternative medicines, well let me just let you hear about my own personal experience........

I have a problem, it took nearly 15 years for specialists to work out the problem and make a correct diagnosis. Many incorrect diagnoses were made along the way. Many conventional medicines and clinical techiniques were used. After two failed operations that were quite major I was given some drugs, it appeared a correct diagnosis had been made.

The drugs worked, symptoms subsided. The drugs had bad side effects though and could only be used for a short period, a long term use drug was handed too me. The long term one looked bad, very bad. I had been investigating alternatives, decided I had nothing to lose and tried one. It appeared to work, but I was sceptical. Had tests over a period of 12 months to confirm things were under control, they appeared to be.

Best health in clinical terms and in terms of my general well being in over 15 years Shocked Nearly two years on the alternative medicine and going strong!

So I would say that I like to dabble in a bit of both worlds and I never discount either one until I have done a LOT of research and/or tried it out. Also ask a LOT of questions before you let people phuck around inside you Wink

NB. Some alternative medicines are just crackpot ideas though Wink

Not wrong! Ive lost about 2-5% in my left eye but that may improve. To be honest im just glad to still have them. There were so many things that went in my favour after that accident where a diffeerence of 5 mins would have meant me not being here so im pretty thankfull.

edited cause you edit yours aswell Very Happy.

Yeah I completly egree with you on the fact you need to keep an open mind about both sides. It just shits me when people claim that general science is closed minded, when the same bunch is pushing alternative medicine as the only solution Rolling Eyes Especially when they start to crap on about drinking your own urine,I asked well what is the vitamin that is produced in urine that is so beneficial?

From what i gathered from another post someone had turned the gas/left it on before he got out there, then he lit the lighter and the rest is history.

as i understand it, Australia has developed some of the best burns treatment methods in the world. for major and acute life threatening issues, i would always turn to 'proper' medicine first.

i see there are a few sides to alternative medicine.

one, crackpots who are full of shit/faith (ie himalayan goat balls etc).
two, faith healing that does work (the whole inner strength thing).
three, "natural medicine" caused by chemicals in tese natural products that have not been picked up on by "normal" medicine for whatever reason, ie, not conclusively proven, not strong enough to be classed as a marketable drug, possible bad side-effects etc..
(anyone else tried 5HTP? available in NZ and US as an "alternative/herbal" supplement, but can have profound efects/bad side effects )

i don't know the stats, but i would be willing to suggest that the majority of useful drugs are of natural origin anyway, but have been subsequently modified or synthetically produced.

and as for urine Razz
iirc, it's sterile (good for washing cuts and things when you are out in the bush), and the drinking thing.... i remember something about tribes doing it, but you need to piss at a certain time, ie around 2-3am, discard first bit, then collect, then discard last bit... the reason being to collect melatonin, breakdown product of serotonin etc, can regulate sleep patterns and whatever, and other chemicals flushed by the brain at the end of the day...

i'm sure there is some kind of medical basis for it, but i still won't be driking my own fluids...

if i am stuck somewhere with a bad injury, i would consider washing it out with urine tho.... (until one of the real docs says not to Razz )

Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?

No, but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste.

I've got the biggest phobia of gas bottle blowing up and stuff since I was a kid, but I was assured by various people that they don't blow up that easy. But now, seeing what happened to you... Sad So they do blow up

Are you tense Corona? You sound tense.

I have some faith in vitamins/minerals as "alternative" medicine simply because if you are healthy then you tend to heal faster/better. My grandfather took a lot of vitamins and some minerals (plus lots of sustagen gold) between bouts of chemo for lung cancer. Whilst he wasn't healed, he bounced back much quicker between bouts of chemo and his health was reasonable for a much longer period of time.

Crystals, energies, shakras you can chuck in the bin.

Urine has been used as a treatment for blisters etc - in the 1st and 2nd world war blokes (esp in russia) would piss in their boots to ease the pain f blisters (and probably reduce infections as urine is sterile). Ghandi used to drink a cup of his own urine every morning - probably why he was a pacifist as it'd be hard going to war with a guts full of piss!. Apparently some chemicals in urine also help you to wake up at the same time each morning.

back on topic, i think something many people don't realise, is that medicine is not the be all and end all, and can't cure/diagnose everything.

i'm sure in a few years, the medicine of today will appear barbaric and completely unacceptable!! rather rough and ready..

it is often hit and miss, and as with all sciences, it comes down to a "best guess" based on the empirical knowledge at the time... in that way, medicine and science in general are evolving. The human body is so bloody complex, and the chemistry alone inside is amazing! we take in random chemicals, and our cells grow new cells.. we create life every second!!

it is entirely possible that increasing intake of certain things (particularly if we are deficient in them to begin with) will assist in the body being able to cure itself... i guess in essence, medicine is simply the science of aiding th ebody to cure itself.... if you cut off a finger, they can sew it back on, but it's up to you to grow the new cells and to re-attach it to the rest of you Wink

meh, most (~80%) 'pharmaceuticals' are based on naturally occuring chemicals that have been synthesised and perfected - the difference being they have had some element of clinical efficacy and safety trials before release (hence why the cost so goddamn much + ??? + profit)

no-one says alt meds dont work, they do, but its not because theyre 'natural' its because they contain some active chemical - just like off the shelf drugs. its just a bit hit and miss as to exactly whats in what, how much, and exaclty what it is and where/how/why it works.

and as a population, aust spends over 4x on 'alt meds' as they do on prescription drugs... dont tell me blackmores and the like isnt raking in the cash too Rolling Eyes

people generally dont like to be told 'theres not mush we can offer you' - they like to feel in control, and actively doing something about what they feel is wrong with them - hence theyll pay for stuff they think might work in the belief they are being proactive - that psychological effect alone can often be beneficial...

Absolutely. You have too dry it out first 'cos it's very moist. Although, I've found it too be a bit harsh on the throat.

Burner... nice to know you're okay and the burns just added to your rugged looks. Smile

Thanks for the best wishes guys.

No pics of the barbie im sorry it was taken by the cops to do tests, like to see if it actually blew up Very Happy

As for the recovery 4 days after that photo it looks like i went to the beach yeaterday and got a bit burnt, well apart from having no eyebrows, eyelashes and a shaved head. Im in no real physical pain except for my leg where a bit of the barbie decided to lodge itself. The cream that the hospital gave me to put on has worked a treat much better than the goldan shower option. Very Happy

beat me to it Mr DOHC

Aloe vera is excellent for burns! seems as if it makes burns heal 10 times quicker!

If you can get a hold of an aloe vera plant, it's the gel clear stuff inside the lead (thick bloody leaves with spikes on the sides)
Thats the stuff you want to apply to burns. My hippy alternative mum grows them becuase there so good for burns and cuts etc.

Hahahaha all gold guys!

I actually had a couple of hotties looking after me,my specialist was really hot..

I was taken to the shower one morning with 3 nurses 2 of them were pretty good and one was a minga, anyways in my morphene induced state i said

"this isnt exactly how the dream went but i hope it ends the same way"

To which the ugly one replied

"what cold wet and alone"

She so wanted me..
Very Happy

She clearly wanted you. Nod

When i was in ICU it was pretty shit... 90% of the nurses were average-ugly... i was in there over Christmas and on Christmas morning they forgot to get me breakfast (despite being reminded 3 times) let alone a visit from Santa like you see on the news. I was 18 but shit, Santa could have at least come past and say hi. Mad

Paletable food in hospitals? When I had my tonsils taken out, I got toast for breakfast. Shocked Stupid nurse, I could't even swallow my own saliva without wincing... how could I swallow toast??

Last stint I had in Hospital the last thing I wanted was some hot nurse giving me a wash in the shower. The uglier the better I thought.

I had about 40cm of small intestine removed, a cut from bottom of the sternum to below the belt line, piss bag attached Rolling Eyes , drips, naso-gastric tube etc.

I felt like shit, looked 10x worse and the last thing I wanted was a hottie nurse giving me a sponge down Confused Keep 'em rough and ready until I'm better thanks Wink

But hell, if I go in for broken bones, lacerations etc. hotties are fine Smile

Food! I didn't get to eat solids for about 5 days, then jelly for 3 days. So they could have taken a crap on a bit of cardboard and I reckon it would have been tempting Laughing

Laughing

That's gold!

If you made it to the beach it soundsl ike the recovery is going well.

As an add-on to my original post: the alternative treatment I am taking is being used in a number of clinical trials at the moment. I just thought rather than fark myself up with the immune suppressing drugs I was meant to take I would give an alternative a go that has no known adverse side effects Very Happy All tests by the specialists have shown that I am on a winner Very Happy

Its a good thing to see your above ground. Could have been alot worse.

*Best wishes for a speedy recovery*

I'd stay away from the urine. It might work / might not. But you'll never live it down.
