how the fudge do I get this bitch strut off??? (pics included) Fri, 30 September 2005 17:34 Go to next message
ok i've cracked it, yet AGAIN Mad

After replacing the rear right air strut last month, i had less than 3 weeks of joy until the rear left started leaking.
So i got me a new air strut, decided to change the rear left tonight for ToyotaFest.

NOW... when i tried removing the rear right, the inner crush tube of the lower strut mounting bush was iron-oxided to the little stub mount.... such that i litterally TORE the rest of the strut (inluding outer metal of said lower bush) and ended up attacking the bitch with an angle grinder to get it off.....

.... of course now this one is doing the same.
I dont want to try removing it like the last one in case i fail - cos then i have no air strut, and that is bad.

can anyone suggest an alternative method of removing this crusted up slut??

just a quick Q, which bit are you trying to save???

if you are just trying to get the strut and aformentioned bush bits off the stub, could you just drill out the bush 90% with a drill bit, and make it easier to rip out? then do the angle grinder jiggidy jig to make it purdy again?

if she's a bit rusty inside, the combination of expansion and chemical bonding of the rusting process will make it very nasty to get off indeed, with no love for you or the strut...

methinks gently seperating inner crush tube from the outer bit by removing as much rubber as possible.. might be the only happy way Sad

yes indeed it is a bedroom lamp Razz

and the method you just outlined is how i removed the last one... so i'll have to wait until morning to fire up the angle grinder... and probably shouldnt do it around Toob's car!!

ahh bugger... sorry to confirm your fears Sad

rusting is natures "one-up" on interference fit Razz

heh heh, and cover all glass.... amazing how thise little bits of metal eat into both car and house glass Confused Sad Mad Embarassed

only other way i can think of is brute force with a decent hydraulic puller, but i doubt you could get enough purchase on the inner tube, or get enough force into it, without it being deformed and slipping anyway...

good luck Very Happy
