speed limiter and the powerchip Sun, 05 January 2003 23:56 Go to next message
Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding the 7M-GTE engine...

I require the 180km/h speed limiter to be removed somehow, due to the car being used on the track.

I would like to know whether the powerchip piggyback computer is a waste of time and money at $890. They claim a 30kW boost in power over stock, but to do this they also increase boost by 2 psi.

I would also like to know how much the powerchip is actually doing, so how much power could you expect from increasing boost by 2 psi over stock without the chip. One thing in the powerchip's favour is that they said that when the chip is installed they can remove the speed limiter.

I am not looking at large power increases, as it starts to cost $$$ to make the 7M engine reliable it higher boost pressures, so with a stock engine with stock head gasket torqued to 72lb/ft (as mine is) what sort of boost pressure is acceptable without overly compromising the reliabilty of the engine?

These probably have been covered at some stage in the forums, but I can't find all these answers. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

Get a second hand Apexi Rev Speed Meter or some sort of "Speed cut defender" if you want to go faster than the 180kph.

From memory boost cut for the 7m-gte is 11 psi?

I find it hard to believe that they would be doing more than a half decent job of improving your power without dyno tuning.
They could be just leaning out your fuel mixtures "blind" which would be slightly dodgy for reliability.

Is your supra a Jap import or Aust. delivered? The local model apparently has no speed cut.

From memory the power increase provided by upping the boost on the stock turbo is 11 bhp per psi, so a 2 psi increase would only account for around half of the 30kw power increase claimed.

BTW who makes the chip? i didn't think many companies made them for the 7MGTE anymore.

My car is a Jap import. It has only been on the track once (at Sandown) where I could only just reach 180km/h on the straights anyway, so I am not 100% sure it is limited. I am hoping to go on Calder Park, Winton and Phillip Island though, where I am told the speeds reached can be higher. At this stage I think I will wait for the next track day to see for sure if it is limited.

It is a bit of a worry with the powerchip not being dyno tuned specifically for each individual vehicle, but being created for a generic model. From a data sheet they sent me, it seems that the boost is increased, and the powerchip just optimises the ignition timing for the increased boost (and for the fuel RON specified). I don't think the mixtures could really be modified due to the the ECU having an embedded unmodifyable processor.

The ~15kw power increase from the boost increase seems about right, due to powerchip claiming 18kW for the 7M-GE, because obviously they cannot increase boost on that engine!

I have no idea who makes the powerchip, but the website is:

www.powerchipgroup.com

Thanks for your replies.

You may find that with exhaust / intake mods you make in order of those benefits anyway.
