random reving??

hey guys.
when my car is idling it randomly starts reving itself 
its starts at about 1000rpm then rises to 2100rmp and suddemly
drops back down again and the whole thing keeps repeating. it does this constantly untill i start driving for a while.
i just pisses me off because i have a fairly loud exhaust and
when im at traffic lights people look at me as if im being a
dickhead 
i was told it could have something to do with my clutch because
it's on its way out...
any help would be apprieciated cheers

if ur idling at the lights, i cant see how it would be the clutch.
im geusing whoever told u the clutch misunderstood you, cause it would randomly jump when driving...
if ur driving along and the revs jump up as if u just punched the clutch in as u are driving along, but u didnt actualy punch the cluch, then its slipping.

mine did this and i have seen it a bunch of times.
do a search for "hunting idle" and if that doesnt return any posts then click on my username, click "show all posts by this user" and it should be in there somewhere.
its not the clutch

well it still revs itself when in neutral randomly but the
clutch is also slipping a bit.
it doesnt jump or skip but it engages right at the end of the
pedals travel an slips at high rpm 
what could be causing it to rev?
i was thinking it might also have something to with the cold
start as when its cold it idles at just over 2000rpm...

Either a leak in the intake manifold somewhere, you have a very dirty throtle body or a air passage in your cooling system.
Give your throttle body a good clean with some throttle body/carby clean then check timing.
If its still doing it afterwards, park up a steepish hill (front of car higher then the rear) remove radiator cap and check water levels, allow to idle for atleast 4-5mins giving the throttle a quick dab everyso often.
Last but not least if all else fails, spray some throttle body/carby cleaner around any joines on the intake manifold, if idle changes you got a air leak causing false signals from your air flow meter or map sensor which ever is the case.

how will the radiator effect the idle??
the engine constantly runs hot...
when not moving the temp needle gets to 3/4 or just touching
the overheating marker before the thermofan turns on and brings
the temp back down to just over 1/2. and the cycle continues 
when driving the airflow keeps the temp fairly regular.

Whats easier to push, water or air.
if you have an air lock in your water system, when/if air comes around to the water pump its easier to move (not as heavy as water) putting less load on the motor momentarily.
Side affect "iractic/hunting idle".
its happened to me many times before i got off my damm arse and fixed the leak.
And for the record ive asked the same question you did and got these same responses that i have suggested.
And it turns out i had them all, not at once thou.
