Hi,
I need an alternator with better current ability for my 18rg with upgraded headlights.
Anyone know of an alternator with better current that will fit the mounts?
Or even an alternator which i can swap the guts with?
Cheers

just get yours rebuilt and get it upgraded, they can change the guts to make it better
or get a better aftermarket one

I fitted a 90amp (or was it 100) alt froma Nissan Pulsar onto mine. The lower mount was a very close fit, just drilled to holes to take the original bolt, and made a new top bracket. Was an easy fit, i'm sure there are other easy fits if you go the wreckers and do some measuring or if you know a parts supplier willing to go through his books for you and get measurments.
But Just for headlights you shouldn't need a bigger alt. If you are having problems maybe you should look at your wiringg (make sure it's clear) and check your alternator power leads and battery earth strap.

well if the standard alternator is only 40A and i have 400W of lights running at 12V, thats 33A just in headlights. Then you have to add the EFI system, and sometimes wipers or fan, not to hard to get over 40A. Espceically when the battery is charging aswell.
But you are right, i will be checking my wiring aswell.
this alternator i have now is definitely rooted though, hardly charges at all.

wtf you doin with 400w of lights? If it's stuffed it's a good time to upgrade. Like Mr DOHC suggested you can rebuild, price that and a new high capactiy alt. I got mine for $90 but that's not much over wholesale.

lol... 400W means i can see wombats coming, lol. Previous owner did it, and i love it.
I took it to a local auto electrican today, he said 'nup' can't upgrade it. He was crapping on about changing the regulator for a higher voltage one. Why is a higher voltage needed?, the alternator just needs to be able to supply more current. If the alternator was able to supply the current the regulator would be fine at its 13.5 or whatever it is.
So he is looking into getting an alternator with an internal regulator with similiar mounts.
Mr DOHC any idea what guts went into yours?
Cheers

I had a bosch ext reg one and got the XF Falcon int reg guts fitted to the original Toyota case on mine.
Had to use a small spacer on the rear of the bracket but appart from that it was all fine.

for future reference....
I ended up getting an alternator to suit a pintara. The mounts are almost the same just needs a couple of washers for spacers, and the pulley changing over.
provides 75Amps of current and is internally regulated
Cheers
