just a few questions for all the tassies out there

if say... hypotheticaly i was to take a job in tasmania... id need somewhere to live of course... id be looking at a 1 or 2 bedroom studio style apartment. want something uber swank / inner city a must.. rental pricetag of around 250-350 a week.. where would i be looking? what inner city suburbs? particular agents? is it all redeveloped apartments or older tenaments?

also.

whats it cost for me to get my car across on the ferry from melb?

Hi,
You'll want to look at the following:-
1. Salamaca Mews
2. Zero Davey Street
A guy I play cricket with lives at Zero Davey. It would be my first pick. Very sweet Surprised
You can get new and rebuilt apartments.
Suburbs would be Battery Point, Glebe and Hobart for your criteria. These are no more than 10 minutes quick walk to the city centre.
Haven't crossed Bass Straight for a while. Google TT-Line, they
operate the ferry. If you can afford it, I would recommend getting a cabin. The boat has airline style seats, and they suck to try and sleep on. If you go the seats, get the business ones. DON'T get the economy ones!!! Ear plugs might be good if you get stuck next to a snorer, or there is a teething baby crying at 3am.
Key streets to look for are Macquarie, Davey, Liverpool, Bathurst. I've lived on three of those, and they were all a nice stubby walk to Salamanca!!! This is basically were Hobart goes off Confused
I'll post the names of the other places to look at tomorrow. Your price will get you a good place.

Cheers

Hi,
They are both in the city centre. 5 minutes tops to the city centre. 5 minutes walk to Salamanca as well.
Ferry is an overnight thing. You get on in the afternoon, and it arrives in the morning. The ride can be very rough. If you get sea sickness or motion sickness, take some medication.
I've been over and back 4 times, and I didn't think it was too bad.

Cheers

$59 bucks one way for a car dude. Just went there for a holiday recently. Many different fares for passengers though depending on what you want.

10 hour boat ride (leave Melbourne at around 9pm, get to Devonport at like 6ish am).

Oh, watch out for the wildlife; I've never seen so many roadkills on a highway before... ever. I came within 5 cm of hitting a wallaby at like 80km/h.

Yian

Oh... one more thing Smile Hobart drivers are shocking... might wanna remember that Razz The rest of the state is ok.. just Hobart.

Hey dude, looks like moo has covered most of it!

The ferry cost me about $110 dollars per person when I brought my car back and yes its an overnight thing. You will pay more for a cabin on the boat. As for renting, I'm starting to look myself actually, Zero Davey and Salamanca Mews are very swish and probably out of the average persons budget. Glebe, Battery Point and North Hobart'ish would be your best bet, there are some alright apartments around its just a matter of finding them.

Keep in mind that the Ferry comes in at Devonport in the North of the state and it will take you a good 3 - 4 hours to drive to Hobart from there.

Depends wat your into ? if u want clubs and stuff like that check out surreal, u get free entry before 11pm, or same for iso, if yer more interested in bars, check out the Telegraph, knopwoods, irish murphys, syrup. Otherwise u could head out of town and head to some dirty old shitty pub somewhere! casino is usually alright aswell! these are just to name a few, just have a walk around salamanca there is some god resturants and bars etc, and most look pretty inviting and open!

Hey matey, you might like to look at Moonah, Montrose and over the back of Glenorchy. All areas are close to industrial/shopping and not the most respected place in the Hobart area, but certainly not the worst though either! I work out that way and don't have any problems... Good pubs out here as well!

There should be plenty of options as well, there are heaps of places!

if u wanna see alot of inbred ppl together go to a pub called "wild west sport saloon" i can promise you that u will see at least one fight and somewhere between 10/50 inbred ppl.

if u want somewhere nice i'd say salamanca or maybe even west hobart as it's quieter than the middle of town but there is only 5 mins different between them.

what kinda job u going for ?

I'd say well away from where the places rainey mentioned aswell.

but nice areas are
sandybay
west hobart
battery point
south hobart
north hobart
the glebe (the houses there are all old and kind of small)
if you have a car it's well worth living somewhere out of the middle of town and maybe 10 mins away.

I was given the option to live in one of the ZERO apartments and i wasn't impressed at all. the wall are too thin for a 20 year old guy.
they do have a conssierge desk tho.
