Just installed an electric aerial in a 1990 MA70 (toyota Ma70 aerial installed) and I can't figure out where to hook-up the remote trigger wire in the aerial assembly, if it is in fact required. Anyone got a detailed wiring diagram... or had experience with an install???

if its an import ma70 you dont need the R/C car look with the radio tower as theres one in the rear hatch glass!

Hi Alan, I've got an import MA-70 and was wondering about this but have a question, there is two aerial plugs in the dash, one big one small, but my head unit has only one the large one. This is some sort of diversity antenna setup I think, as there is a control box in the tail light. Is there a way to hook up only to the one in the window?

Ithink my car was made for the Australian market (the speedo goes up to 280) so - i assume - it doesnt have any antenna/wires in the rear glass. I havent had a look at the wire colours yet but I assume that the black/red and pink/blue wires your referrng to are in behind the stereo near the gearshift? I'll check it out this w/end

Hey hoff, tell me more about this diversity antenna thing. What does that mean?? Did some cars have a glass one & a telescopic one? Why?
As far as the original q goes. How many wires does your power antenna have and what are they labelled as?
It sounds like you have it all sorted other than the remote trigger. If there is a "power" wire other than this "trigger" wire then its easy. There will be a "remote antenna" wire with bugger all current coming from your head unit (aftermarket im assuming) which you can join it to to make it pop up when u turn the stereo on.
If there is only the "trigger" wire on the antenna and no other power wire then the unit will take power through this wire, and the "remote antenna" from the head unit will not do as there will not be enough current available. You would need to tap into your accessories wire and it would pop up & down when the key is turned past "accessories"
I hope that made sense.

OK, here is a list of all the wires that plug into the factory antenna and what they do.
1. Blue/Red Accessory Power (Cigar Lighter fuse)
2. Black/Red (thin) Trigger 1 (Factory head unit)
3. Blue/Yellow Constant Power (dome light fuse)
4. Not Used
5. Pink/Blue Trigger 2 (factory head unit)
6. White/Black Chassis Earth
7. Black/red (Thick) Ignition On Power (ECU IG fuse)
So with your aftermarket aerial, it should have three wires coming off, usually Black, Red, and green.
Red goes to Blue/Yellow
Green goes to Black/Red (thin)
Black goes to White/Black (or vehicle chassis)
Yeah mic, most import stuff has FM diversity antenna's. My GZ-20 doesn't but my mates MA-70 does. Finding info on it is pretty hard as it was only ever big in Japan. From what I can gather, the theory is that the deck measures signal strength on both antenna's. It will use the primary (Vertical), most of the time, but if the signal level on the primary drops below the secondary it will switch over.
The properties of VHF FM signal allow it to bounce off hard objects to a degree and can cause the signal to go from a vertical alignment to a horizontal alignment in dense areas, (i.e Tokyo). As the secondary antenna in the glass is horizontal as opposed to the primary, it will give better reception in this scenario.
It still seems like a hell of alot of effort to go to just to listen to the radio, but I guess Japs will always take things to the extreme.
