Nasty clutch noise

OK, no noises while idling in neutral.
As soon as I pushed the clutch pedal down, I get some pretty unhappy noises. Kinda whirring, scraping noises. It was really bad at first, but has almost entirely stopped now. While it's in neutral or in gear it's fine - it's only while the pedal is held in.
I have a brass button clutch - could it just be bedding in? Does bed-in occurr with the pedal pressed in, or does it only happen as the clutch takes up in-gear?
I really hope I put the clutch in the right way. I'm 95% sure I put the big chunky part inside the pressure plate, and the flat side to the flywheel.
Just say I did get it wrong. Would the noises get better like mine has, or would it always sound really bad?
I took the car for a run around the block with no problems at all. Take-up is fine, drives fine. It's just making lots of bad noises... though not so much now as it was at first. Barely noticeable now, but still there none-the-less.

Sounds like throw out bearing to me, did you replace it when you did the clutch?
The fact that the noise is only apparent when engaging the clutch, which happens to be the only time the throw out bearing is used lead me to suspect this as the suspect...

Yeah new throw-out bearing. Though I don't know if I installed it properly! There seemed to be only one way to put it on...

Yep. Mine does the same noises (sorta scrappy/rattly) which we attributed to the throw out bearing. But have done nothing about it for a year. It's still working...

How bad are the noises here?
My clutch did exactly the same thing when I installed it; I pulled it out after a day or so and found I'd put the clutch plate in backwards. The noise was the springs on the clutch plate grinding against the flywheel bolts. The noise was only apparent when the clutch pedal was in; with the clutch out the whole thing is spinning at the same speed so no noise.

If its a throwout bearing you can just put up with it, it not going to hurt anything, its just irritating.
Since you have new parts tho, i would be investigating Norbies experience... Never heard of that being done before...
I dont know if its physically possible to put the throwout bearing in the wrong way...

The noises are fairly soft now. At first they were pretty bad though.
