MX83 ntake mods - better performance/economy [7M NA] Thu, 06 October 2005 14:13 Go to next message
Hi Folks,

Some thing usually unheard of. Better economy and performance . No way. Idea is designed for a MX83 Cressida, though maybe applicable to NA 7M Supra, and other 'vane flapper air flow meters' cars such as camry, celica, mazda, lexus from around the late 80s, early 90s as well.

Summary:

* Colder, less restricted air into intake via:
- removal of snorkel to airbox to improve airflow
- use a foam filter instead paper filter to decrease pressure drop
- creating larger customer snorkel to run behind headlight hole
- use air shield to protect intake from engine heat

* Leaner mix during changing throttle conditions via:
- 680 ohm resistor parallel to the air temp sensor in the AFM.

NOTE: Consider good coolant/synth oil before running leaner. Some say the 7M runs pig rich from the factory. Best would be water injection, but that is another project.

Another idea worthy of your consideration
-------------------------------------------------- ----------

IDEA: Acetone, 2.34ml per 1 litre fuel to improve fuel economy
COST: 1.7c on fuel costs per litre when using Bunnings $28.98 4ltr acetone
BENEFIT: Save anywhere between 12-46cents per litre through better fuel economy

(Decide for yourself. Includes risks/benefits, provided in service no financial benefit in sale of acetone or reduced sale in fuel)

Cheery,

I'd be very wary of fooling the ECU into making the mixtures leaner with something as crude as a resistor. Do so at your own risk; remember the 7M is notorious for blowing headgaskets, and there's no faster way to blow a headgasket than running lean (which leads to detonation).

As for acetone, I've heard mixed results about this. Some swear by it, others find it makes no difference whatsoever. I'd be interested to see your test results though.
