microtech mt-4 3D mod Mon, 06 January 2003 12:03 Go to next message
I have finished putting the EFI on the rg, all in and running 105rwhp with basically no mods except extractors, so bout what was expected. I am running a Microtech mt-4 ECU which I am fairly happy with, easy enough to navigate and make changes to. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you run off the same load map for the entire rev range. I have heard of the 3D mod but I don't know what it costs or how effective it is so basically all I want to know is how much and is it worth it? How about upgrading to comupter controlled ignition (running off electronic distributor) and pc hookup software?? Are they worth it, and how much? Thanks guys.

What do you mean by one load map??
MT/LT series Microtech's are great for 4a engines.

It should have a LOAD map with a heap of reference points to corelate to through the map sensor plug on the side of the microtech. Have you hooked that up?

3Dmode is only for ease of tuning, its no real advantage for power/economy etc. I dont use that part of the laptop software. It's only for the LT(laptop programmable) series anyway. The upgrade is $200 including software and dongle. You will loose your firgures so write them down before you send it in, takes about 2 weeks. I love the laptop software cause you can also datalog and make adjustments in tuning accordingly.

As for the electronic ignition, its great! Very good advantage and alot of power to be gained through it.

i'm kinda new to this stuff so be patient with me Smile . Yes the map sensor is hooked up and working properly. The ECU only has one set of adjustment, say at 00" 05" 10" etc.... but with the 3D you have the same map points but seperate ones for each rev range. Does this just do away with having the LOAD,IDLE WOT and CRS seperatly for ease of tuning? Still sounds like a good idea especially for a newbie like me

I have this same ecu, Microtech MT-4 running on a modified 2tg.... and am yet to get it on the dyno but am interested in your power figures and how you have it set-up, what injectors and stuff like that... Mine is running in TPS mode as I have adapted a 4age TPS to the 2TG TB, so I have variable resistanse TPS..... my cams were too big and created irregular vaccuum so yeah..... but it's so much smoother, more responsive than my old weber's and yet still has a nice sound to it.

The injectors were free from crosstek so I don't really know what they are, I think they are stock though. It's an 18r-gu with EFI bolted on, slight port an polish (more like a clean up) and extractors into 2 1/2" exhaust. That's about it. Still sounds nice and runs ok, just needs a bit more fine tuning to get it running good.

The 3d mapping doesn't do away with LOAD,IDLE WOT and CRS maps.

The MT4 will interpolate your LOAD map with your RPM map and give the correct fueling that you need at that particular instant anyway.

IDLE map is necessary only for when you back off and your TPS is 0% but you just backed off from a big whack of the throttle. The values in your idle map should pretty much be identicle to your LOAD map values unless you have some problems, which are very uncommon.

WOT-is for Wide Open Throttle extra enrichment of fuel. For instance when you snap the throttle full open it will add extra fuel for nice crisp acceleration without hesitations. It's great for turbo's cause you can add extra fuel which helps turbo spool up cause the exhaust density hitting the turbine is higher.

CRS-(cruise) map is to give you fuel economy whilst in cruise conditions. Very handy for your pocket. You set the cruise enable point, say 15"Hg and whenever you have more vacuum than that and the TPS above 1% you can minus a % of fuel off. You have to set this up on the freeway with an a/f ratio reading. Take some fuel off till you get to about 15:1, thats what i've set mine up to. You gotta do it for each RPM band, best to do it in top gear at around 90-115kph, thats where you will get the most benefit.

yeah i've done all that already. Just trying to clarify what the 3D does and why if at all it's beneficial. So the 3D matches revs with MAP to give a fuel setting instead of just using MAP like it is now. How is that not beneficial to economy and performance.
