1jz Power steering underdrive for the drift?
|

hey guys, i wanna start my 1jz mx83 on the drift circuit next year, just thought i'd ask a q.
I heard that v8 soarer power steer pumps shit themselves when under full lock/high RPM...seeing as our new cnc lathe with live tooling is arriving at work tomorrow, would it be worth spinning up a set of 7050 alloy pulleys for my 1jz and underdriving the alternator and power steering for sustained higher rpm/load? Or am i just totally wrong with my concept? lol
I want to get rid of the hydraulic fan system...gets in the way when working on my rig and its one more thing to shit itself. So i just need the late model 2jz water pump and a shorter (possibly commode) length serpentine belt, correct?
Cheers,
Troy

The problem is more to do with being at full lock for extended periods. This will induce around 1300psi in the power steering system. Normally the is no back pressure on the power steering pump. When the steering wheel is turned, a few hundred psi is generated while the wheel is moving, and then the pressure drops to almost nothing. If you are at full lock for long periods, the pump will be working against around 1300psi backpressure. Underdriving the pump may help the pump last slightly longer, but will not reduce the backpressure.

if you are setting up a cressida for drift be preperd to pay big bucks as parts are harder to get then a ae86 and we have to do just as much as they do from engine conversion tranny conversions and alot of suspension work

werd! I have an MA70 oil cooler as my PS cooler, works a treat, no issues with powersteering whatsoever

youre a dipshit...
why dont we all go out and buy AE86's and S13s if we wanna drift...then there would be massive amounts of diversity wouldnt there...I am personally sick of every tom dick and harry sliding identical cars...take your opinions elsewhere...

haha mr 1j....i was thinking the exact same thing. Not everyone thinks tofu delivery is the only occupation for a toyota driver...
Especially if i turn out to be pretty good at it (years of motorkhana/khanacross/rallying experience) Sponsors are more likely to notice a unique car performing well, rather than a bunch of corollas doing mediocre
You dont need to spend massive dollars on gear for my car, especially when i work with CNC machinery as a day job and have a little nouse to make some suspension bits!
The engine is sorted...a 1jz with a bit of boost, yum cha cooler, exhaust and cold air is fine for starting out, and once john from importbitz gets back to me, i'll have a R154 heading my way once it lands!
As for suspension, i'm thinking i'll get/turn some weld on strut adjusters and throw in some konis...i know shane did this on 1jz-747 and it allowed for him to run 10s, so why cant they perform just as well for drift? They dont list them on the online catelogue so i'll have to ask at my suspension dude.
Thanks for all the replys guys, i think i'll just buy a trans cooler and get enzed to plum it along with the non speed adjusting mx83 rack...just gotta find a spot for it

I'm guessing the jz ps pump doesn't reduce assistance as the rev's get higher then?

Lol i know you have coilovers in your rig, but the range is much more limited (ive looked on yahoo numerous times) for the x81/83 unless you want to spend the big bikkies on brand new tiens or KOs
Ive found a few pairs of jic coilovers on there (same as john has) which arent bump/rebound adjustable, and probably not rebuildable like the konis.
On the other hand the konis have support in oz, will be brand spankers, and are adjustable. And probably for a similar cost.
Does anyone on here have konis in their rig to tell me more about them?
Cheers,
Troy

I use the non adjustable JIC's in my car and they seem to be OK. Mine did come with come with different springs from normal though. I would prefer to have adjustables but they're not really necessary. I had adjustable tokico's in my AE86 and I rarely ever changed them once they were set.

yer my cuscos are 8 way damper adjustable on top and I have fucked with them twice i reckon...not worth it once you get it setup right...
pauly what spring rates you got?
did you finally get the two way in?

fuck knows??? they're umm purple, stiff, look like springs. Thats about all I can tell you about em.
Diff's not in just yet. For some gay reason toyota used a 12mm hex bolt to hold the rear housing to the cradle. WTF???!

i my self have a mx83 cressida im building for track use and some parts are very hard to find and cost alot or you have to get custom things made
there is nothing wrong with the cressida sept lack of parts

ahhhh, thanks for that, i needed a laugh
why won't a drag setup perform as well for drift, let us count the ways ;
and anyway, 10's have nothing to do with it, it's to 60ft time that will be affected most (and yes he had a great one)
now.. drag = rear weight transfer and soft rear end for GRIP
drift.. little weight transfer and hard springs all round = no grip...
and for those kiddies that KEEP on saying you need grip for drift....
look at back wheels.... spinning = much lowe friction than non-spinning tyres..
look at front wheels..... turned to FACE THE DIRECTION THE CAR IS GOING... and if the front wheels are providing more force (from grip) than the rear wheels.. the car spins
kudos for trying somthing different in the aussie dorito "scene" but don't get confused as to what you are setting the car up for

lol i know the theory behind drift suspension, i was just stating the versatility of koni's...they can go run 10s on a soft setting and then be stiffened up till it feels like you're running on bump stops ( i have them in the back of my rally escort)
The cressy hangs right out as it is with just low aurora springs and a stock flogged out LSD...should be awesome with a 2 way and some better shocks.
I think i'll go for the koni route at this stage. Brand new yellows are around $500 for a pair...only mx73 ones were listed but you get the idea. I should be able to make up my own collets, hats and sleeves, or buy a set off john for $250 or so.
I dont know the price on new king springs but all in all it should come in around the price of non adjustable JIC (possibly rooted) jzx81 coilovers landed in oz.
Thanks for all the help guys, my car would have never even gotten to turn key stage without tou lot.
Cheers,
Troy

The outlay has already been done (1jz and manual), and i managed it on apprentice wages so it cant be too bad...you just need to be a little bit wise on how you spend your coin. Cressys seem to be a nice stable platform and i know that i feel a lot more comfortable going sideways in a toyota luxobarge than in a tramlining, bouncy S13 that would probably put you in a wheelchair if it ever clipped a pothole mid corner lol...

as for original question.. sure why not.
if the engine will primarily be used at high rpm, by all means underdrive it. same goes for water pump and alternator.
but if revs go down..... will it be safe? will it be ok to drive elsewhere?

The only thing i can say is watch that rear cradle under the torsional stresses, they have a nasty habit of cracking.
Infact if it does crack reinforce the hell out of it.

cressies are nice to slide as they got a nice long wheel base seem to be easyer to control
sorry didt know you already had the manual 1jz in there..
but good luck with the project hope to see you on the track some day
