Righto blokes,
The gearbox in the RA28 has developed a very noticable whine in recent weeks. So much so it's pissing me off no end. What needs to be done? Rebuild? New gearbox oil? The box is out of a TA23. Anyone got a good one they wanna flog off?
Thanks for the help.
Cheers, Greg.

Dunno if it's t50 or not. It's one of them old alloy jobs.
Yeah, the things whining in every gear.
Scuse my ignorance but what are the benefits of a w5x conversion and what are they out of?
Cheers, Greg.

Sounds like a t50 then
Benefits would be strength, 3tgte's put out a bit more power than what t50's were designed to be put behind. You won't find yourself needing to rebuild another t50 within 12 months or so if you upgraded to something a bit tougher - which is a common thing for t50's!
They're supra gearboxes generally, but also some cressidas and a few other things depending on which variant. Also in carina/corona's which had 3tgte's in them from the factory!
There's a bit of a list there
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/9975/dataBy Subject/Gearboxes.html
And Simon's site has some info on putting w55's behind a 3tgte to give you an idea what's involved
http://users.chariot.net.au/~stmezz/3tginfo.htm
Depending how you drive a T50 might hold up ok, but it would be well worth pricing up the difference to upgrade vs rebuild

Has it got a leaking rear main seal and is losing a lot of oil??
Perhaps its low on oil...
If it still shifts fine then one would suggest it may be losing oil, therefore low on oil.

Thanks Dale. Good solid advice. Much appreciated.
There has been a few drops of oil on the garage floor but nothing that looked too serious. I'll have to crawl under and suss it out.
Cheers, Greg.
