The magnetic clutch is found on the front of the compressor its there so the compressor does not run all the time and constantly drag power from the engine. I cant help you with any of the ecu stuff as i have only had experience with steam driven a/c units (figure of speech).

thanx for that Jason. If u could tell me how you would wire this up to an aftermarket computer (EMS is the computer dual sport II) so that it would work properly?

norbie the only reason i worry is that the one wire it is on the orginal ecu which makes me think its there for a reason, but if its an on/off switch, i know ems has a/c control id assume i would just connect that wire up? therefore the on /off should work well in theroy

I thought that when the aircon is on, the idle speed on the engine is upped a little?
Or is this just a load of crap I have heard?

I think you're right, the ecu doesn't control A/c function, it's to tell the ecu that A/c is on and adjusts idle speed accordingly. I just cut this wire out of the harness in my conversion with no A/c, 5M-GE into MS-55. The cressida wiring diagrams show it as switched from A/c control and it shoud either power or earth the wire to the ecu.

Yes, most cars have an idle-up function which engages when the compressor is engaged. On older cars it's just a bypass valve which lets a bit of air around the throttle body, but I guess newer cars are a bit more sophisticated than that (ie an input on the ECU). I wouldn't worry about it though; it's really only important on cars with automatic transmissions.

On newer cars the engine ECU does control the ac compressor. It wont let it engage until the car is running for atleast 5 seconds, also realises when you have fully got your foot planted and are overtaking for example and disengaged the magnetic clutch for more power. Also turns off compressor in limp mode and when engine gets way too hot.
