installing a catalytic converter

My '84 Cressida is currently having a 5M-GE transplanted into it. This engine is a designed to run ULP whereas the old 5M-E was leaded, so now obviously I'll require a catalytic converter. What sort of things should I look out for? Can this just be added to the exhaust I currently have (stock) or would people advise that a cat-back system is the way to go? I'm keen to keep the car fairly quiet for now.
Any suggestions including sizes (2.25" too big?) for the system would be greatly appreciated. Also general costs would be helpful.
Thanks
Glen

if you want to keep the car quiet, you can just weld a cat in your exhaust system ... just make sure it's a decent cat so you can pass emissions.

Hello,
I know it has nothing to do with a cat.
How easy is it to put a 5M-GE into your Cressida. What things did you need? I have a Supra and thinking of upgrading my motor...
Cheers

i have a 2.5 inch strait thru mandrel bent system on my 5M-E best $130 i spent on it bit noisey but ohh baby does it go
if it didnt have a cat as far as i know in VIC your not required to add it (not shure tho!!!)
i myself would even consider swaping the blocks over to keep the original engine number (new barings and a head gasket throw a new set of rings in and give it a hone should make for a nice fresh 5m-ge with your original engine number) but i like todo things the hard way i think you could just plonk the 5m-ge in the rta would be none the wiser the engine number will still read 5Mxxxxxx

When you do the engine number change, you'll have to take it to an RTA approved workshop so they can check it out and make sure it's roadworthy. If you need a cat, they'll tell you. Either way, a good cat isn't really going to hinder performance unless it's stuffed.

ZZT231: The swap is fairly easy from what I've read. I should be picking it up from the mechanic's today or tomorrow. Going by what Rod was saying, it can be a bitch due to wiring as the digital version is quite different to the analogue. However others using the MKII Supra engine (still a 5M-GE) say it all hooks up easily. I went with an import 5M-GE rather than one out of the next model Cressida (84-89) so I'm hoping its an easy fix. I haven't heard from the mechanic so I'm assuming this way worked. I'm getting the engine plus installation for $1500 with a 3-month warranty on the engine.
