the best option is to convert the rear end with a hilux diff. it will also accomodate a engine power upgrade.

Have a look on my article on the RT141 upgrade.

Every Hilux I've seen, even the late-model Surfs, have rear drums. So how is a Hilux upgrade going to help?

FWIW upgrading the rear brakes is going to do two tenths of bugger-all on a street car. If it's a full-on race car it's worth the trouble, but otherwise don't bother. Definitely upgrade the fronts though, you will certainly notice the difference there!

i agree with norbie about doing discs all round

BUT a hilux disc rear end has been done by dave and allan, and daves can be seen on Ed's website... www.eds.au.com .... well when Ed finally gets the bloody thing back online you'll be able to see it Twisted Evil

Yeah it's been done, but that's a custom fab job, ie it didn't come with discs originally! Since the original poster wanted to know about rear discs, the Hilux conversion isn't going to help him.

Gidday

I think that you will find that the RT141 disc brakes are a bolt up to the Hilux diff. These brakes are the same as can be found in the VL V8/Turbo Dunnydoor but with 5 stud rotors.

And Allan just copied mine! It took a couple weeks of hard core research and pottering around skanky wrecking yards to sus it all out.

The RT141 backing plates won't fit over the rather large Hilux central bearing carrier so then you need different calipers to get a handbrake. I did look at it as an option. No good.

Look at Ed's site for the Hilux disc brake conversion. The slack bastard hasn't updated it - there's even a price list in the finished version.

Looks neat.

That said, you still have to ask why do you want rear discs? Unless you are going for a significant power increase, there's not much point. The best upgrade is actually servicing your 30 year old brakes, using good fluid and decent pads.

Hey Nark, I got Comp2s for my MS112 rear end. I had to wait a week, but I got them.

Are you after some? Just front up to a brake specialist preferably someone that dabbles/specializes in competition and have a chat. You will get what you need.

celicamad85, was saying that no one makes decent pads for the RA60 drum rear.

gianttomato, that's what I'll be doing when it comes time to do my pads.
