Does anyone know a good company to do Advanced Driver Training courses with?
Would there be enough interest to organise a group of Toymoders to attend such a course?
Im pretty keen and Im sure others will be.

Sounds like a good idea... But everyone probably thinks they're that good they couldn't possibly improve!! hehehe!
Anyways a drift meet would be good but then again I'm down in Victoria and I can get free Advanced Drivers Training if I crash enough company cars.. Hehehe!!

I went to the Ian Luff driving school (Motivation Australia). ph: 9829 5399. Was held in that race thingo (in a side bit of it) just south of sydney.
Stage 1 is required before you can do any other stage and covers the basics that most excelent drivers will already know but it gives you experience actually doing the theory.
Stage 2 is advanced car control and is more of stage one but at higher speeds, more hands on, more sitting in the car with the wheel turned sharply and your foot down hard skidding all over the place.
Stage 3 is intro racing and is held on the racing track. I know you have to do 1 before 2 or 3 but I forget if you need to do 2 before you do 3.
It was a bit expensive but they cover everything in depth. I did it ages ago so I can't remember it all but with Stage 1 half is theory in the classroom and half is being instructed on the runway. The driving is very enjoyable and the thoery isn't boring. It is a loooong day, and you can't really take friends cause you spend the day in the car. (and you're not allowed passenger - they'd learn for free! : )
I think it made a difference to my driving and I implement almost all their advice at all times. The skid control training is invaluable, the problem is one hopes one will do it like you did in the lessons when it strikes unexpectedly, in the rain and dark on an unfamilure road!
The only thing I dissagree with was their ideas behind driving with two feet. They reccomended it because when someone is doing something wierd up ahead you can accelerate slowly but touch the brake so your lights come on to warn people behind you of a possible emergency stop.
My opinion is, in that case take your foot off the fucking accelerator and hover over the damn brakes. There is middle ground to breaking and accelerating: It's called Rolling and it's very effective.
There are too many cases when I'm driving behind a taxi and the bastard uses two feet and he keep bumping the brakes over every bump and his lights are light a bloody disco. You can never trust when they're slowing down or not! Awefull to drive behind!

I did the Ian Luff thing. It POURED that day, but I was bored all day long. All it teaches you is braking and swerving.
I didn't learn a single thing about car control, but then again I've had to do all of that (many times) on the street. Driving like a maniac most of the time helps you learn that...
The only time I came close to losing control was the braking around a corner exercise. I came around the corner real fast and was starting to understeer as the guy blew the whistle. I slammed on the brakes and threw in a heal-toe downshift just for added spice and came to a stop...
It was interesting to see the handling characteristics of the different cars though.
Utes just totally suck...
Excels will lock up their rears first on hard braking... That's just shocking....
4WDs with ABS are some of the best brakers around! Man they pull up quick!
Oh yeah, and it's held at Oran Park.

I did the Ian Luff thing....Stage 1 and Stage 2 in my little Suzi Vitara (mind you, up against 3 WRXs!).
Features of the day:
* Memorable gross pictures of crashes...I will never drink a can in the car again, they mangle faces even at slow speeds.
* Ian Luff giving me the "you are such a female!" look because I said I couldn't drive manual. Grrrr.
* The Range Rover had to do 10km less than the rest of us cos it was leaning a little too much for Ian's liking on the curves.
* The Celica (86 model) only being able to stop in *double* the distance of the WRX's (with ABS). Nice car, but I know which one I'd rather be in....
The whole point is NOT to play silly buggers. If you wanna learn the snazzy stuff (i.e. not legal on the roads) try somewhere else. The Ian Luff one (well Stage 1 & 2) is about avoiding accidents or at least reducing injury/damage (hence why my dad made me go as soon as I got my P's) and was really good for that.
The most surprising thing about it, I found, was you don't want to go racing and skidding on the real roads when you drive home from it. Some of it actually sinks in and stays with you for years after, which I reckon has saved me from running into things in the wet many a time, and stopped many a jerk from riding up my arse cos I now don't slam on the brakes.
Btw, ditto about the two foot thing...as an auto-only driver, was not impressed that they expected me to actually do something with my left foot.

haha.. thats just how cabbies drive, there is nno tactic to that.. they are either full on the gas or full on the break.

I also did the Ian luff course as soon as i got my p's "oldies paid for it" and again i never learnt anything about car control that isn't already basic car knoledge for most car nuts but i learnt a great deal in safetly to do with seating position's and about air bags and so forth.
if you want i'll start up my own advanced driving course through the watagans state forestry now that i've been through there in both front wheel and rear wheel drive cars i now understand how both handle and act on the slippery stuff
$100 for the day
rear wheel drive = fun with lots of dust and sliding all over the place,
front wheel drive = excitment and more concentration and a bigger smile on your face when you pull a corner off perfectly,
and theres nothing like driving a front wheel drive with the back hanging out
