Oil catch can Thu, 09 January 2003 05:22 Go to next message
What are the advantages of having an oil catch can?
How do I know I need one and where do I connect one on my 1JZ?

Oil vapours are normally pumped into the inlet and burnt off by the engine. In some high-boost applications, excessive blow-by causes shitloads of oil to get pumped into the engine, resulting in fouled plugs and other nasty side-effects. The solution is to catch the vapours in a big can (where they condense into liquid oil) instead of burning them.

Do you need one? If you're burning shiteloads of oil under high boost, maybe!

Also oil vapours are particularly low octane and can promote pinging in a highly tuned motor. A good catch can will allow enough time for the vapours to cool sufficiently and condense, thereby minimising oil vapours entering the mix.

They are highly advisable in my opinion. You can safely wind a few extra degrees in at full boost as the detonation threshold is increased.

Where do they sit? They look like a fuel surge tank don't they?

You sit them wherever you want but generally wherever is easy to get to. They generally are cylindrical but, again, can be made whatever shape. They usually have an in and an out, and also a point of drainage. I don't have a good pic of one handy.

Phil, here's a pic of a really expensive brand name one. The little 'doover' on the side is a level indicator so you know when to empty it. This one doesn't look like it has a dedicated drain, so every so often you have to unbolt, disconnect and empty it.

From memory the 1J has 2 breather outlets, so you'll need to block one of them, and install the catch can out of the other one. I really want one on mine, cos the last 2 times I pulled the intercooler out, a nice layer of oil was at the bottom. Not very nice !!
If anyone knows where I can get one (cheaply) it would be much appreciated.

I know that Star Performance in five dock have a couple of different types there. From memory they weren't expensive at all. Under $200 I think?

Guys, make one. Autospeed even had a "how to" a few months back. It'll be a lot less than $200. Like $10-15.

Or you could just do what i do... vent the PCV directly out under the car Rolling Eyes
Although my car isnt turbo'ed so i dont loose much oil through it. I set it up like this to help smooth out my idle.

If it's pre 1973, they won't care. That's exactly what my 1966 Crown does.

Yeah just make it yourself.

Here's one I whipped up earlier:

I would have posted the pic but it's bloody big.

This is made from an ikea cocktail shaker & a modified fire extinguisher bracket. Cost me all of 10 bucks for a big drill bit, the rest I picked up for free.
