OBD Serial Data

OK, I am interested in the serial data that the ECU can output when TE2 is shorted to E1.
An overview of what I talking about can be found here (pdf ~330K). OBD is pre OBD-II (duh) and scan tools aren't really available. Things like 7M-GE's, 1JZ's (pre vvit) etc have the ability to send out serial data I believe
The data output contains a number of things that I think would be quite groovy to know As such I am going to look at reading the data somehow...(I do have a little bit of electronics experience).
If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be quite thankful (anyone work at toyota perhaps and can make some scans of relevant doco that I don't have access too?).
Cheers

its not that easy
my snap on scanner is worth 5000 bucks and it works sometimes
on the diagnostic plug in the engine bay it wont work on some
but it will on the diagnostic plug under the steering wheel area
its ok but its just rhe basics like o2 temp timing
most of the stuff u can read with multimeter not worth that much money
or u can get a karman scanner theyre worth over 12000
or u can buy a device called a techtom
they come from japan and plug into the diagnostic plugs
i have seen and used the ones for nissans
but not touched th eones for toyotas
for oen that will give u speed air flow meter volts
and maybe 2 or 3 others they range about 800 bucks
u basically need to decifer what comes out of vf2
but in th eend a multimeter is a much better tool than a scanner if u know how to use it

Check out this site
http://www.autotap.com/
I know they do OBD-II readers but I'm not sure if they do OBD.

most of that site is gm ford and chrysler
i import tuners and flash programmers for ford quad cam v8s that are imported from the states
they retail for 800 bucks
u can do abit of adjustments to the tune and also has datalogging stuff
theyre call diablosport predator
and im looking at buying ls1 edit for use on holdens but its 4000 us dollars so i think it wont be worthwhile for me yet
i would need to retune more than 10 ecus to get my money back
http://webhome.idirect.com/~neethlin/Pricing/Techt om_Pricing/techtom_pricing.html
shit look at the above prices not cheap for the toyotas

I'm planing on making my own reader/scan tool. I have a decent grasp of electronics (almost finished Electrical Engineering & IT Degree), and if I know the serial data format I feel pretty confident that I can get some good info. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on it that is for sure.
Things such as
*Inj Pulse width (can calc fuel economy, duty cycle etc)
*Ignition
*idle speed control
*O2 voltage
*inlet air temp
*map/afm voltage (can use this data to display / log boost etc)
*Engine Temp
*ECU fuel trims
*TPS
I was under the impression that VF1 was used for OBD, and links to ENG inside the car under the dash.
Some information I have atm
*14 to 20 data words (suspect v8's will have more outputs eg 2x O2's etc hence needing more output sequences).
*unidirectional i.e. ECU -> reader (cannot do reader -> ECU)
*100 baud (this is dang slow )
*typicaly 8 bits/word
*if TE2 is present the engine supports serial data output via OBD
What I really need is the data words, or the sequence of data words (i.e. is there start word, followed by the data in a set sequence or?)
OBD is very different to OBD-II, OBD-II does not interest me at all
Thanks for your time
Cheers

Wilbo - I looked into this a while ago. I even got onto the manufacturers of the Techtom in Japan. Unfortunately they have ceased production of the Techtom for a JZA70 and weren't able to give me any info on decoding the data stream.
I hope you have better luck than me.

Hmm, I am not getting filled with confidence here guys!
82MKII: Sounds like you gave it a really decent shot
