How to cleaning engine for rebuild

Hi,
I have a particularly gunked up old hgih comp 4AGZE in my garage, so far I have stolen shims and head bolts and other stuff off it for my AW11SC, but I plan to rebuilt it.
What is a good method to clean the caked on crud / burn't oil and god knows what else off from under the cam covers?
Is there some kind of chemical dip that can be used for an alloy cylinder head? I have a feeling that this job is too extreme for spray on de-greaser!
Cheers, Nick

pull all the parts off, take them all to an englibe rebuilding place and get them to dip it.. best money you'll ever spend...
or an old enamel bathtub full of petrol and a toothbrush.... i shouldn't have to tell you this is a slightly more dangerous method

Pardon my ignorance, what is chase-tapping?

you chase the threads with the right size tap.you use taps and dies to make threads.
get it all dipped {make sure they take out all the gallery plugs,as some dont),machined ,balanced then tap all the main engine threads.then right before and i mean when its on the stand and your about to put it together use gun barrel brushes in the gallery's to clean them and then blow out with air. then i use very very very hot water and rinse the engine well.then blow out again and dry with air.then oil the bores caps etc etc.then it is time to start putting it together.this is a ruff idea not exactly what i do.

chase taps are designed to clean out the thread without cutting any material which u may do with an ordinary tap of that size.
Pretty much just a thread with flutes in it(like a tap) so that the gunk has somewhere to go.
They are actually specifically 'chase' taps.
