MINI debuts competition dragster Fri, 21 October 2005 03:33 Go to next message
MINI USA unveiled this wild MINI at Hot Import Nights in Phoenix this week, capturing the Best Engineered award for the event.

The MINI drag car was built by California tuner Fireball Tim Lawrence, starting from a John Cooper Works-version MINI Cooper S. The 1700 lb, FWD racer features carbon-fiber bodywork and a 500 hp, twin-charger powerplant. Fireballs blog has a history of the build-up, with pics.

The car will make its competition debut in Pomona this weekend at the NHRA Sport Compact World Finals, followed by an appearance at SEMA in Las Vegas.

New high-performance MINI unveiled

Quote:

The final model for the current MINI series was unveiled this weekend at the MINI United fan-fest in Italy. The MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works GP will be built by Italian specialty builder Bertone, for launch in the summer of 2006. Only 2000 of the GP version will be built.

This track-day version of the MINI is reported to have a modest power increase to 218 hp, but performance also benefits from an 88 pound weight reduction. Weight savings come from new Recaro front seats, removal of the rear seats, elimination of sound-deadening material, and replacement of the rear axle control arms with aluminum units - all of which are traditional track-car modifications.
