i recently had a fuseable link blow on my car and now it has been replaced. the question is that should the electrode of the battery spark when connected while the ign barrel is turned to off??? does it mean that i have an earth somewhere causing the fuseable link to blow???? cheers

just means you have some current drain.. ie something is on.. could be somethinglike interior light etc...
try putting.. say... a 5 amp fuse between battery and terminal and see if it blows.. if so, you prolly have short (if everything is turned off)
if it doesn't, put a multimeter in series and measure the current draw... from that you can work out how many watts it is and see if it is likely to be a globe or not...
oh.. and have fire extinguisher ready just in case...

thanks, will try the multimeter idea. funny you should say about the fire extinguisher as when the link blew it gave a huge cloud of smoke and scared the crap out of me. that was with heater, stereo, windscreen wipers and lights on though. Thanks for your help.

iirc my car draws about 200mA when the ign is turned off and nolthing that shouldnt be running is.. ie: no lights etc.
this is what services the clock, stereo, etc etc.

If my interior light is on, it sparks (I was actually surprised how much it sparked).
If I close the door, there is no spark.
All my drains will be ECU memory, CD/stacker memory, clock memory and remote central/immob.
From memory it was like 150mA with door closed, and about 800mA with door open.

don't base it on sparks, measure it with a (10 amp) multimeter.
mine draws 1-2 amps at the moment, battery went dead flat after 4 days.
anything under half an amp is OK, less the better.
