Oh NO, Are my 1J turbo's stuffed?? Fri, 10 January 2003 09:18 Go to next message
Hmm, I took off my intake manifold today, and its all lined with oil. Same as the Compressor outlet piping....

I dont have it running, so obviously I cant tell by driving it.

How can I check them ?

Cheers
Ray

Ahhhh, another pair of stuffed 1J turbos?????
I thought those engines were so rubust compared to the 7M.

Sorry i couldn't resist Very Happy

Probably not stuffed dude, almost all turbo's leave residue in intake manifolds, intercoolers etc. Just how much is the key, litres ofcourse is no good.

I don't think you need to worry unless there is a crazy amount there. Mine have a very light coating as well, but I know that my turbos are fine. The best places to look at in the bottom of the intercooler, and the lowest parts of your intercooler piping. If there are extreme amounts in there, start saving some money Sad

I agree with Soarer, Kalium... The oil in your inlet tract isn't indication, or cause enough for alarm to think your turbos are rooted. Alot of engines will have a thin film of oil or at least some indications of oil deposits in the inlet tract due to the positive crankcase ventilation valve dumping greasy air from your tappet covers staight into your inlet. Skylines in particular have very oily intercoolers and inlets due to this. Check out any standard car from any suburban driveway and you'd be suprised how dirty their inlets are. If you really want to know if your 1j turbos are stuffed, check for unreasonable play in the shaft backwards and forwards, up and downwards. This will be the best indication. Also remove and inspect the oil/water feed/return lines of a turbocharger to get an indication of it's previous life. A blocked and crusty line could indiate an overly stressed turbo on the way out.

Thats if you ever have to do a head gasket. I'm putting out alot more that twin T 1J's and still have the head gasket it came out with in 1989. And i'll only have to change my turbo if i want over 500hp Very Happy

Getting my new cooler tonight Luke, should be quite a few more ponies in this one!
