Possible tailshaft/Diff Problems Mon, 24 October 2005 01:39 Go to next message
Ok so yesterday on the way home from the shops came around a corner that after the recent rain has copped some really bad potholes (i didn't know this till i rounded the corner). Anyway came around the corner at about 20kmph in second and its a 70 zone so i accelerate pretty hard to get up to speed.

Coming round the corner the car got some really bad axle tramp (not abnormal for the car). Anyway drove it home and noticed that the car didn't like to exceed 4 thousand rpm thought maybe the oils low. Got home let the car cool down oil was low topped it up etc.

Anyway took the car out for a drive, now it'll free rev fine past 4krpm and will do it fine in first and second gear. But now you get to about 100kmph in third (4krpm) and the car literally stops accelerating. Change to 4th and you can get to about 110kmph before the same problem happens but at about 3.2rpm.

Had a look underneath at the station to day and the diff isn't leaking (which it has done in the past) so i think there may be a problem with the tailshaft as there seemed to be a bit more vibration thru the wheel then normal.

My next door neighbour is a mechanic (and has performed the mantainence on the car) so i'll see him to check it out this weekend but is there anything i can check to see if anything obvious is wrong.

*Deep breath, try to be helpful*

Ok Rona lets break down your probs:

Engine can't make the RPM is used to, give a bit more info, is it just like it's hitting the wall (like when you hit 240km/h and can't push past the wind resistance) or is it misfiring at that point etc.???? It hasn't developed a massive exhaust leak or something has it?

If the WHOLE car is vibrating it could indicate a tailshaft problem (loose bolts, very worn out uni-joint, bowed/unbalanced shaft). If you just feel it though the steeering wheel it is more indicative of an unbabalanced wheel, perhaps a wheel balance weight fell off or the pot hole took a chuck of rubber off your tyre? A very unbalanced wheel could be felt through the whole car too.

The tail shaft wouldn't limit engine rpm, even a completely rooted tailshaft that is bowed will rev to the point where the car rattles apart and the tail shaft destructs.

It does seem strange to develop two completely independent problems at once, but in old cars it does happen.

Thanks for the help, it is very much like hitting a wall in terms of there is no noise to suggest missing etc it just gets to 4krpm rpm and stops, in the lower gears sometimes it seems to hesitate a couple of times but once again there is no apparent noise from the engine.

As for the tailshaft its only the steering that is vibrating, the wheels do need a balance but it is much worse than it was before. I'll check to see if any wieghts have fallen off and also check leads, and spark plugs tonight if i can.

Oh and just incase someone suggest it i doubt it's a BHG radiator coolant is still nice and green and oil is still err black but no milky substances (thats another story).

Oh and exhaust leak i doubt, cos after topping up the oil yesterday i left the bonnet up and started it, let it idle for about 10 mins and didn't hear any obvious leaks. Once again i'll check tonight though.
