If you can make it fit, would be one hell of a drag car. IF they can fit a 2JZGTE into one in Japan, then you know its possible. Do expect to be taking corners seriously though...will root up the weight balance royally.

Putting it really bluntly, the only thing the sprinter really has going for it is its handling, so putting a 1J in it would be a bit of a waste in my opinion. There's plenty of small, light RWD cars around that could fit a 1J (well, with as much effort as it would take to fit to a sprinter) why use a sprinter?

something like a TA22/RA23 celica would prolly be the go. yogi got his weight down to about 800 i think he said ... allow another 100kg for the 1jz, you're looking at a 900kg car with potential for over 400 horsies... plus they have an adjustable radiator support, and there are a few people who've actually done it whom you could ask about it
in any car like that tho, there's going to be lots of cutting and squeezing to try and get it in

I don't know about weight differneces but at the sprinter day there was a 1G sprinter and he said that it handles heaps good, can't remeber if he said it was actually better but he defenatly didn't say it was worse.

couldn't handle better unless he'd done other work.. 1G is a lot heavier than the stock sprinter engine and the 1JZ is a lot heavier again, and because it's longer more of that weight is closer to the front of the car

Perhaps you ought to take this guy's opinion with a grain of salt. I know people who reckon their stock Cortina/Gemini/random shitbox handles "heaps good".

OOO try this no one does this mod and it works
get a BEAMS 3s-ge and turbo charge it its stock with about 220 hp as a 3s-ge design with a turbo the sky is the limit.

Dude the gen 4 3SGE's have comp ratios around 11:1. Where are you going with turbocharging it?

ok, this may be a very naive question, but I've never understood exactly what comp ratios are, and more importantly why you shouldn't turbocharge cars with very high comp ratios

I was looking at a S13 silvia or a mid-80s BMW 3 series to slot the 1JZ into, but my mate suggested it would be a pity to move away from Toyota.(he drives a Supra TT,I drive a Soarer TT). So i guess I am clutching at straws a bit looking at an AE86.I shied away from the early celicas due to their age, though I quite like the shape.Any other suggestions,Gentlemen?

That's an easy one: MA61 Supra! They're about the same age as an AE86, but a big inline six like the 1JZ will fit quite easily. Take a look at my web site and you'll see how good a 2JZ looks in an MA61 engine bay!

There is a dude oer here in Perth who has an S2000 that is turbocharged. They have over 11.0:1 compression stock. Imagine with some boost shoved down its throat.

For draven, compression ratio is the ratio between the volume in 1 cylinder before & after the stroke. So with 10:1, if the motor was a 2L 4cyl, the volume at bottom dead centre would be 500cc, and the volume left at top dead centre would be 50cc (500:50=10:1). And the more the a/f mixture is being compressed, the bigger the bang when it's ignited, and the more power produced.
So if you're pumping in a mixture that is already compressed (with a turbo) then the compression ration should be reduced a little bit, or the turbo limited to mild boost settings, otherwise the engine will be under too much strain.
Some one may like to add something, or correct me, but that should give you a basic idea of C/R.

1JZ + AE86 = Pain.
if you want to put the engine into a toyota,I suggest you take Norbie's advice, and go for a *A60 celica/supra. the bay is designed for a straight six. the sprinter is designed for one thing alone-the 4AG.
going for a silvia isn't a bad idea,as it's virtually a bolt-in proposition to go from a CA18/Sr20 to an RB series 6cyl. grab a skyline crossmember, and off you go! the cross member bolts straight to the silvia floorpan! no toyota swap will be that easy. the 1JZ into an S13 would be painful, and for what? not much more power potential than you can get from working an RB25.
Ribbo: Nathan has a beautiful car,but I reserve my judgement on it's handling. I just don't see how doubling the weight over the front wheels can give no ill handling effects. as was said, one man's idea of top handling is another's idea of a boat ride. look at the americans...they wouldn't know a good handling car if you ran them over with one.
with a 4ag,the sprinter is damn close to a 50/50 balance. how much heavier is a 1GGTE again? couple this with the fact that the 1G was in the 4A's normal position -in front of a std firewall-meaning more weight in front of the front axle line than usual, and I don't see how it could be unchanged.
I'd love to be proven wrong however, but I doubt that will happen.
Justin...

I thought so, just checking tho
and you can always reduce the weight at the font... move the battery, aftermarket front spoiler (apparently the stock celica one, and it's mounts, weigh 15kg)

Thanks Justin for your thoughts.I already have the 1JZ motor sitting waiting for a car,so this is why i want to go the 1Jz route.Besides,i regularly cane R33 Skyline coupes(1400kg) in my bulky Soarer-the Toyota motor is somehow better. How much do these MA61 (or*A61) Supras weigh?I like the shape. How much does a RA23 weigh?Who has got a six cylinder in a RA23?

uuuummmmm matthew green <matthew@metrolink.net.au> has a 1jz RA23, but 1JZ celicas of any kind will run into similar issues, having similar size engine bays. basically, you should be looking for a toyota that came stock witha 6-cyl engine, like the 5M or 7M supras

I just got myself a 2 door Mk2 (MX23). Very straight with a bit of rust in L rear quarter panel. It is 60 kg lighter than the 4 door MX13 (1220 kg) and I now have a contact for a windscreen. This car IS the shit. 2JZ inside (soon).

Sprinter weight distribution from factually recorded weights as of yesterday!
front rear total IRA11Y 540Kg 500Kg 1040Kg Mos 540Kg 490Kg 1030Kg Ribbo 540Kg 470Kg 1010Kg
remeber rear weight is subject to fuel load I had 3/4 tank Mos ran 1/2 and I didnt see Matt's gauge
all cars ran 4AGE engines
I would hate to see the front rear split with the 1J and seeing as I have been staring at one of these engines all weekend I would definately not want to face trying to install it in to a sprinter, Im sure there would be firewall issues to start with let alone trying to mount it on the cross member.

Have to get RWC and club rego on it with 4M. Then let the madness begin! It's the NA variant, but it's not as Toyota created it.
I have seen a 2JZGTE in an AE86, but it was an out and out drag car (featured in Options magazine). I still think the Mk2 Supra remains your best bet, followed by an older Crown/Corona Mk2. They are unloved cars!

I still think you can not go wronge with a beams if you must use 3sgte piston to lower the pressure then increase your boost its easy to get 300 hp out of 3sgte and engine is super light

3s-gte is of course the best way to go comparitively light 4-cyl, and it's got LOADS of potential.
that and the fact that the sprinter weighs less than 1100kg, which quite limits what sort of turbocharged engine you can whack in it
