I havent got my TA22 yet but when i thought about it i will end up spending a whole heap on it and im not even after a fast car really lol. Just a nice clean close to showroom deal lol. Not even a expensive sound system lol.
So far my Price list looks something like this :
The TA22 : $2000-3000
Wheels : $1500
Shift knob + Steering wheel : $300
Sound system : $1000
lisence plates : $200
Seats : $800-1500
Retriming interior : Not sure of prices.... alot $2000-3000
Paint job : Also alot.... $3000-5000
Bit of engine work : $1000-2000
Exhaust : $1500
And there you go beofre you know it you have spent a heap lol
Added up at a mins thats : $13300
So around $15000 i'll porbably end up spending on a car that orignally was $2000-3000 lol. what about everyone else?
Probably don't want to remember all those dollars lol

$1500 for an exhaust on a lightly modified ta22 engine?!? what a waste!
that's how much you'd pay for a 3" 3-stage system. with a ta22, I wouldn't be going past 2.5", I'm fairly sure you dont need a CAT on them (since they're so old), so it shouldn't cost you more than $1000, absolute maximum

dude seeing as i worked in an exhaust shop $1000 and you can get 4-2-1 hand made extractors into 2.5 inch , (no cat needed) and a stainless steel muffler and have change left over
or you can shop around these forums find some extractors sandblast them and then powdercoat them for around the same price as new ones and they will last heaps longer
for what its worth i picked up my cannon style 3 inch to 3.5 inch tip mirror finish stainless steel muffler for $150 second hand but never used, i am using 4-1 extractors that i made myself into a 3 inch exhaust but my setup will be a lot different to yours

well i bought the completely straight re-sprayed TA22 shell for $800 with HEAPS of spare parts including a 2TG and heaps of other stuff. I've already made ALL my money back just selling parts that were inside it! However i went and got it mini-tubbed and a few little things that go along with that, and already that alone cost in excess of $2,500, and that was at mates rates too! so already i have a bare shell with no motor or anything, and i've already spent the equivelant that any normal person would pay for a complete car that already goes! I am also getting a motor built which has already set me back $3,500 and a WHOLE lot more to come! it's no where even near complete yet i guess that the motor built and installed, wired up, hooked up, everything, i'm looking at around 10 to 12 G's. Not to mention my 18 inch custom built FR Simmons which i got directly from Tony Simmons himself for around $3000. (and no i can't get them this cheap for anyone else!) I will also be swapping over my $4,000 stereo system from my other car. so already i am looking at just over 22 thousand, and i still havn't got any interior, i havn't got any driveline to back my motor up, not even a friggen steering wheel! haha, you never realise how much a grand here, a grand there, adds up to until you sit back and do the sums. Trust me, you'll spend more than 15 grand, i don't know of ANYONE that has spent less on their project car than they had first anticipated, it's almost always a case of "ohh, might as well get that done too while the motor's out..." lol

i know the feeling.
I budgeted, then re-budgeted with $2k to spare, then I went and bought one that had already had all the work done to it (well, most of it) for less than it would have cost me, and already I have a few gran of extras that *need* doing, before I look at luxury items (like rims)

I picked up the car with 1G-GTE, mandrel exhaust, Suspension, Front brakes, Engineers Certificate, pretty 2pac paint, retrimmed interior and supposedly $3k spent on sound.
Paid $6k for it, pretty good price I thought.
The car is in need of a strong diff, (I had to put in another standard one last week to get me to work) Budget about 1K doing it myself.
A few spots of rust to be fixed. Picked up a pair of excelent condition doors for $150. A few bits to be cut out and repainted. I guess about $500 - $1k
Wheels - Big and Bright - $2k
A few other things like boost upgrades, dyno tune, a few trim changes, etc etc. Another $1k -2k
All up around 10k and I'm happy.
Driving a fast celica .......... priceless

I'm going to go against the grain a bit here... I've spent bugger-all on my RA23. I guess it shows really. Still, on a shoestring budget I've managed to upgrade the engine (18R-GEU), transmission (W50), suspension (lowered) and brakes (Supra fronts). It performs pretty damn well for something so cheap, but it sure ain't pretty (hence its name, the Orange Eyesore).

Im in the Norbie School of Celica upgrades
Celica cost me 2K - was my nana's car - came with the 2.5 inch sports exhaust New ( thanks to my dad ! * haha !! )
I picked up a fully rebuilt and worked 2tb ( drag spec ) worth $2500 all the work had been done to it bar induction and Dizzy remap for 800 bux - and it came with a spare 5 speed
Picked up my front and rear swaybars ( rear one brand new ) for 100 bucks !!
Ive just spent the last 2 weeks doing up a set of mk2 supra mags to mirror finish + resprayed the inners - came up a treat - need tyres though
Interior wise - Ive put a nice stereo in ( just a cd head unit - and decent speakers - No doof doofs and Prelude bucket seats. Much comfier and cheaper than the SAAS units i was looking at
Purchased an as new weber 45 side draft + manifold + linkages for less than half price for new , and a set of genie Extractors for the other side
All up - including motor - Ive probably spent 2K on the old beast - I still have to re-cam the motor - finish a few suspension things - redo the front brakes - and do up the remaining body/paint issues
It wont be a show car - just a neat Street cruiser with a thumping 2t-b in it
Expected cost ( excluding paint ) for remaining mods - less than 2K
So - its still going to cost me in excess of 8K all up to get it where i want
My big dollars will go into the next project - possibly a St185 or St205 Gt4 -

Wnat a cheap exhaust? my RA23 is out at pick'n payless "Sydney" and it has 2" extractors, 2inch all the way through to a 2" high flow lukey muffler with a big 3" oval chrome tip which the tip cost $70 and the muffler is only about 4 months old. also they have taken the webers off the engine but the cam is still in it and it was a mild street lumpy cam so that might be worth something. easy to find the car as its the brightest car in the whole lot.

Its strange how it goes from being one extreemly loved car to some other piece of metal sitting in a wreckers yeard getting abused vandalised and just sitting out in the weather with windows down/smashed ect,
but it sure felt good to sit in it again, god you have to love the sitting position in a RA23 celica

Karl the sad thing is how people break perfectly good parts just to get some really small bit, the dash panel around speedo ect has been cracked, door trims ripped ect, can't believe fellow celica lovers are destroying pefectly good celica parts just to get another,
