buy a new thermostat your engine is running way too hot. im sure it is not opening properly.
I would think it should be a 1/4 temp for normal driving with the cooling system in good condition.

My TA-22 Rally car would only operate at those temp during competition, during normal driving the temp would sit rock steady at 1/4, could be you have some work to do.

um, yeah, it is a new thermostat thats the thing!
although, for what it cost it might be worth trying another one.
before i started any of this it would be sitting over the 180 degree mark as it was - now its way above. methinks my radiator might be blocked also - prolly worth a looksee...
thanks for the replies guys...

flush out your radiator with the garden hose and see how it goes.
if it seems it top shape the next port of call is the water pump dieing.

the thermostats opening way too late - like the other guys have said - mine never gets over 1/3 on the guage - even after very heavy footed driving ..
somethings not good here - other possibility would be a blockage in the actual motor/head ?

before you fit the thermostat it is a good idea to flush your system to hopefully get rid of any gunk that cloged the thermostat in the first place. When you do this check the pipes to the radiator if they r stuffed this is an ideal spot for gunk to fall into your system.
How good is the water pump?

lol mine doesn't even get to the first mark on the gauge!!!
Cucumber on wheels it is.
Modified three core torana radiator with twin ten inch thermos keeps the hybrid beast cool.
Now some of you might think this is to cool, but I have a second temp guage coming from the side of the block , sit's at about 75 to 80 degrees, and my thermostat opens at 72.
so big thumbs up to my upgrade I'm really happy with it.

yeah when i pulled out the radiator i flushed it (i constructed a tool that uses hose and compressed air to force the gunk out) ran that thru the radiator and then ran the hose thru the engine (with thermostat removed) to flush out the block/head - water went in cleana and came out clean no issues.
water pump - i have no idea, but, am thinking that it might be on its way...how to tell? when the thermostat is opening i can see the water flowing (albeit quite slowly) thru the radiator cap and thats about it..

I had a similar problem in my 2TG, the blades on the water pump had corroded so bad, that they resembled nails. So with the radiator cap off, the water still flowed, only slowly.

yeah it does only flow slowly...
speaking of which was chatting with my mechanic who reckons my new thermostat might not be opening at the temp its supposed to - i'd be more on that being the cause in my case...

Just cos it's a new thermostat, don't mean it runs good. A mate had a similar problem with his Suzuki GTI (rally car). Dropped a new engine in, did all the regular stuff, including new thermo, had the gauge off the dial in the first rally, first service point we took it out and threw it as far as we could. The car worked well for the rest of the rally.
