3sgte gen1 - gen2 crank differences? Wed, 02 November 2005 06:02 Go to next message
Hi All,
Does anyone know if the cranks on a gen1 3sgte are stonger or weaker than a gen2 3sgte ? I have been seaching over the weekend without much success.
I was thinking of starting a thread about the 3sge engines and try to show which parts are compatable between different generations. Is this a good idea ?
Thanks
Paul

Sort of Wink

I will let you know the exact differences between the two cranks when i blue-print my ST165's engine. The only difference I can see at this point is the oil-ways are slightly larger on the gen 2 crank.

The gen 2 also uses larger flywheel bolts so the flywheels are not interchangeable , I have put over 400 hp out of the gen 1 with standard internals witout problems other than headgaskets .

What he said.

I think the flywheel is different size as the starter motor is in a different spot on most gen 2 engines.

I just picked up a gen1 3sgte and have stipped it for some parts and to have a look.
I puchased last year a gen2 3sgte crank (I hope it is, this is what I was told Mad )and it has the same bolt sizes as the gen 1
both are 10 x 1.25mm holes 8 of them.
the gen3 crank I have is also 8 bolt but is 12 x 1.50mm
What is the torque spec for the 10mm bolt crank ?

Have a look at the oil-ways if you aren't sure whether it's a gen 2 crank or not...

I'm pretty sure the oil feed for the main or big-end bearings is larger on the gen 2 crank than the gen 1.

i have both here, the gen1 is slightly lighter this may mean weaker? also the gen1 has a smaller diameter rear main so requires a different seal,
