It appaears to be graphite, and from what i've heard u dont use sealany on graphite gaskets, can someone fill me in? Here is a pic of the gasket:

Has anyone assembled a 2t-g recently? May even be the same as a plain 2T? I'm 90% sure i don't use sealant due to being 90% sure it's a graphite gasket, but please can someone make me 100% before I do it! Thanks!

I would use Hylomar on the gasket. I have used this a few times on both my engine and other peoples engines that I have worked on. Put simply, it is good s*&t! The spray on stuff is easier to apply.
I am guessing the Toyota manual would only recommend the use of sealant around the joining between the timing cover and the engine block, this is because of the potential uneveness of this region.
Once again, I would use a smear (note smear, not a whole tube!) around the entire timing cover top lip that touches the head gasket. You might need a slighlty bigger dob around the timing cover/engine join.

the last three 2tgs I built and rebuilt in the last 2 months I didn't put any sealer on the head gasket. I only every put a thin layer of grease on the block, and on the head, then wack the gasket on and off she goes. that said I do use a sealent on all the paper type gaskets, eg. water pump, timing case, thermostate housing, and some times the sump, depends if it's cork or a rubber one.
Never had any problems, and also if you need to take the head off againg it makes the gasket 100 times easier to take off.
