1JZ / 7M Starter motor compatibility Thu, 03 November 2005 06:01 Go to next message
Ive got a 1jz cressida which has just managed to kill either the fuel pump or ignitor. As it died in a very dangerous spot I used the age old trick or cranking it in gear to get it off the road... in turn im pretty sure killing the starter motor.

Simple question, can you use a 7m or even say a 1G one in its place? I happen to have have easy access to both of those over a 1J one..

Car in question is 1JZ GTE R154 manual cressida.

Cheers,

TJ

Presuming you're talking about the smaller, backgeared one, then you can swap a variety of starters in place of it. I did this yesterday with a 4A(F?) starter, just swapped the cast piece off the front of the 1JZ one onto it, and all was well. Find a Toyota starter that appears to be the same size etc. and you should be able to piece one together.

5M on left, 1JZ on right.

Both bolt up/fit to a 1JZ (auto or manual should not make a difference).

Cheers

The bolt pattern between the 1j/2j & 7M starter motor is the same, however I ran into problems when I tried to use a 7M starter motor on a 2J. It wasn't clearing the ring gear when it was fully disengaged. Neither the ring gear nor the flywheel were standard on my car, so this undoubtably contributed to the problems - just be aware that they are not identical, so if you start swapping in aftermarket parts (like flywheels) you may run into problems with the 7M starter.

The 2J starter motor is also supposed to be a pretty common upgrade for 7M owners, so it wouldn't make much sense to go backwards (if you can avoid/afford it).
