Cleaning Alloys

Hey,
Just wondering what is the best way to remove dirt and crap and maybe a little paint from alloys? Just got myself a set of sigma gsr pepperpots and they are a little bit dirty. I was thinking paint stripper but I don't know if its too harsh on the surface of the rim. I don't wanna re-paint 'em, just clean and polish them up nicely. Advice on polish would also be appreciated.
Cheers,
Alex

clean them with a brush and a little bit of dish washing fluid (this is my backyard trick), wash them down with water. dry them off, then go buy a alloy/metal polisher to brighten them up.

If the "Alloy Wheels" have been clear coated, many are these days, steer clear of any polishing medium. It will only scratch and dull the surface. If you are prepared to completely strip the clear coat, and polish the alloy, then that is a lot of work.

Give Autosol a try. Great metal polish.

Can I use paint stripper though? The insides of the "pots" have been painted and I want to remove the paint (if you knw pepperpots you will know which bit I mean). I don't want to damage the alloy

Get some Meguiars Hot Rims. Give the wheels a quick scrub, get off any loose stuff you can and anything that comes off easy. Spray each wheel, and by the time you've sprayed the last one, quickly come back and start hosing the first one off. A lot of it should have just come off, and the rest of it should have been loosened. Scrub and repeat until it's as clean as you want. Just make sure you get it all off the rim and don't do it on anything you want to live, it's a mild acid.

What if the previous owner used a mag cleaner that ate through the clear coat! and the bare metal itself is now tainted. Can you srub them back and just use a polisher?
