Who's going to the Classic Adelaide rally ???

Well guys - its coming around again , and this year WE ACTUALLY HAVE A RUNNER!!
the V8 Capri Perana project stalled due to my Co driver being sent to Iraq ( with the medical corps , patching bomb victims ) for 2 months , but we were smart this year and invested in a backup car.
While its not exciting as an arse kicking V8 coupe , we managed to find a concourse condition Rs2000 Ford escort Mk2 , that needed some mechanical work to get her up to spec .. needs a few more decals to go on , if we can manage to rummage up a few off the guys who have helped us
As of 9 pm yesterday - She runs , and is kitted out ready for fun! Should handle the task ok - and give us valuable experience for next year
Were not in the full competitive ranks , just in thoroughbred touring to get some experience before bring ing out the perana at a later date , but should be a fun week of hills runs !
Hopefully ill See a few of you out there spectating - feel free to come up and say Gday - id be glad to catch up with anyone in adelaide who can come out

I'll be there in some way.
Call me on 042 111 9249 and I'll try and catch up. Pity about the perana, but at least you'll have some fun.
Earl;ier this year I managed to score a VZ Monaro and a HSV AWD Couper for a day and drove some of the stages during a day off. Even in those cars it was great and can't wait to get my Supra going

Im listed as a co driver but likely be navigationg for the event - as ive just got out of hospital - not 100% fit
bbaacchhy - ill whack your moby number in the phone - and note you if i gedt a chance
Re perana -well - it was a pipe dream after the whole tsunami and iraq thing happened - he got called in for both things to help patch up the injured , which cut close to 3 months testing and rebuilding time out
Though the little red escort should do the job , as were only learning this year - plus the perana needs bigger brakes, we'd kill the ones on it now on the first stage

heys ken - you might remember talking to me on the 2nd last stage on the rally in 2003 , i came up in a red classic adelaide shirt , and asked you about the car and took some photos of it
Im glad your back in it this year to have a go - youd mentioned you had a few plans to upgrade her last time from what i saw - i believe diff and brakes for starters , and there might have been a little engine wirk too ??
What class in competition do you run ?? if all goes well this year - we'll be stepping up possiibly next year with the perana ( has to be modified to be race safe anyway ) or tweaking the escort up a little more to handle brake and so on better - probably competition standard at this stage - dunno ..
anyway i hope you enjoy these photos i took of your car at the start point - and look forward to catching up with you again
Its nice to see some of the more well known cars like yours and oours punting about within the super exotic ones

arch your not allowed , it strictly forbids drifting at the event ( grin )
but yeah if you see us - come up and say gday
RWDboy - it would be good to catch up again , hopefully the circle of gt4 drama will end soon for the both of us
you know your car MIGHT be eligible in a few years to run in the event ( the st165 ) but they ahve to lift the ban on AWD turbo's first
thats why they wont let my group A replica run - stupid rules - YET they allowed a HSV coupe$ to enter - big block AWD ..
who kows - maybe we'll try next year again
OH and good good news - sprinters and MA61's come into the age bracket as of next year - WOOT!! time for a toyota hit up on this events

a year or two off for yours joel ..
and youd have to hide the HKS gear ..
early NA ones should get in ok though in a year - they started when - 1984 ??
ae85 and ae86 come up next year ( 1983 ) as go ga/ma6X's as they started in 1983 too
ATM - 1982 is the most modern available UNLESS your specifically invited to attend
this is how the HSV boys get in , the later porsches and ferraris and the super expotics - THOUGH much to my discust - they are letting in a r32 GTS-T in this year in competition
they still wont let the Gt4 in - bieng AWD , but ill ask yet again gfor backup next year - as it would cane

one day to go - were still running - didnt run yesterday - the escort completely and utterly destroyed a set of extractors - spent all day before the street party helping getting a new exhaust running ! Prologue was fun , first day was going great guns, we were learning quickly abut how to do stuff properly , and getting a feel for the car .........
then .....
1 km from end of the last stage on the gorge - BANG!!!! clatter clatter clatter - extractors had split open in about 5 places , though , we later found out that they were old , and a shit brand - and had no hope of keeping together ( they were on the escort when it was purchased )
So yeah - new set of extractors in - and the rest of the system done and were running - car sounds stinking hot - but underneath mechanicallyits basically stock which is great - gets lots of looks ( thanks to MiDAS MAGILL - Dean and john , and shaun at advance headers, holden hill for keeping the shop open, and getting out eary to start on the car )
had an absolute ball last night at the gouger street party - We had at least 30 - 40 people come up to us in one way or another saying they had either owned , raced , wanted , or had a escort JUST LIKE THAT in the family - just shows how popular they are , which is ironic - seeing the little red thing was getting more looks then the 250 grand ferrari parked next to it
at the first teabreak - we stopped at an oval near some primary school - had a line up of abut 20 kids climbing in and ut of the escort looking at it and sitting behind the wheel and so on - so they had a ball too - and we didnt mind em having a look - there was nothing they could hurt
Caught up with the mee's - sorry about stopping you in the street - the bloody phone kept on dying on me and went mad - but thats all good now , saw chris ( takai ) and his GF , and BJ last night ( hoped you liked the rice mate ) - bachy , steve , woulda been good to catch up but theres always next time
one more day to go - we just have to keep the escort on the tyres and out of the trees , and weve seemed to have picked up a clutch issue so we hope that doesnt die tomorrow but if so - so be it otherwise it will complete an absolute ball of a week
If you have the chance - give it a run , so far though weve found its certainly not cheap and cheerful , especially if you dont have a budget/support crew like the big boys , but if you have something stront and reliable , and keep your driving to say , 90 % and take time to prepare for the scary stuff , it all seems pretty safe , and you dont need a porsche or a ferrari to do it
on that for what was asked - they are pretty pick on what cars go in so yeah - its best to ask the organisers on what may or may not be allowed ( ie a Gt4 cant go in , i know this for a fact, but maybe a early Te levin or a86 trueno/levin , or mint ma61 might be able to slip thru ( eds one would be ideal for this sort of event ), hey they let a r32 skyline in i cant see why a turbo A supra for example culdnt ! )
Safety gear wise - for us ( thorobred touring ) you dont need much more than fire extinguishers , triangles , etc etc and helmets , but if you can afford proper race seats - do so - harnesses , and a cage - all definates IMHO - especially if the car involved has power .. Weve also invested in a terratrip computer and coms setup - and single layer suits just for a little more safety and coms ease
our escorts Stock as a rock car for the clutch , exhaust, padid racing pads up front , and a set of pedders struts , but were finding its lacking in quite a few areas , like handling - needs better springs , swaybars and bushes , gearing - 2nd is too high - third too low ( diff could help this too ) and i find it really hard to keep seated in place , not in the door or the drivers lap, so seats and harnesses would be really good
most of these bits are going on the Perana though - that will be made up to be something a lot faster scaryier and ballsier
hope that informs enough for now - as im buggered and need sleep for tomorrow

quite possible you did , were the only red rs200o in the field - we got thru yesterday unscathed
but that changed after the firststage this am - got thru montague before it was called red ( too many crashes ) - then broke a engine mount heading off on the next one ..
bar for the mount - the cars fine - were fine but coulda got messy = when it broke - it dropped the broken mount onto the steering arm = which left us with no control of the car - if it hadnt happened in the start of stage , we probabaky would have ended up smashing into a bank treee or going off down a a bank so im sorta happy it hapened there , instead of at high speed
So , this ends 2005 classic for us - just the dinner tonight then back home again to get the gt4 on the road again
ken - i hope you had better luck than us - i got a few photos of the celica for you - and ill get them to you asap if you want

Sorry to hear about the problems you had but Im glad you enjoyed yourselves. We definately saw you guys but you like most of the other drivers were probably concentrating on the up coming 45kph corner exiting the straight rather than 4 looney mofos hanging out of a tree

for those thinking of entering
they have dropped the age of cars eligible to 1981 , from what i though would be 1982.. ( unless its included specially by a selectors committee )
entry fee's are over 5 grand for all the categories except the classic tour ( the most regulated one - ie lower lower speeds , no competition stages etc ) which is about 3 grand

Stu,
Just got back from a business trip. Yeah we finished but lunched our new gel battery last stage on Friday....cost us 30mins...not happy!Having discussions with the battery supplier!!
Car ran hard other than that....got within 500meters of a Falcon GT on the Gorge Rd stage!!...on Saturday...!! Like I said running hard. Tagged the armco on Thursday on the corkscrew stage going just a bit too quick. Be very interested in seeing your photos. One we bought has our drivers side front wheel 6'' off the deck....who said we wern't trying!!
cheers,
Ken

heh - got a few - they are pretty big - so if you have space in your email - ill send them across - just lemme know what the desired address is
No tryes up here though we did get a few photos as well from the official photo dudes - Bruce is gettign them scanned up for me to post - and im getting 2 originals to get framed up as a momento
She sounded sweet as ripping off the line too - one of the better 4 cyls for the day i can guarantee
On gorge - that stage was so much fun when things didnt break ( thats where we broke the exhaust 1st day ) - looking forward to doing it again next year with more handling - the RS is already on stands starting improvements as we type, its just going to take some time - and obviously cash to get it sorted and re-entered.
had an absolute awesome run on montague - we got thru before they red flagged it - i believe a few had a nasty run after us
On a stopwatched time - we were about a minute slower than you , according to the posted times on the website and the time we grabbed off the watch - which i was really impressed with from our point - Bruce got the feel of the car by the 3rd day and had a really good crack at that - no faults - and managed to pass the lotus europa (?) who led off in front brakes never failed - but shes still way way too soft up front to be precise , so the steering box may need to be looked at as well - bruce says his old escort felt crisper - less slop in the box , so hopefully its an easy adjustment
Were also getting the gearbox redone to have more suitable gearing - found 2nd too short , 3rd too long - need a better middle of the range setup so we dont have to keep it on the limiter all the time
Got absolutley owned by 2 monaro's though - no hope of catching -or keeping up And also got passed earlier on the 4th day By the now infamous speeding mercedes CLK ( 180kmh in an 80 zone - here about that ?)
let us know how you go re the email address

No didn't hear about the CLK? Send photos to me via; indestra@ozemail.com.au but save them as a 'jpeg' file first, and then attach to an email. This way they will not overload the server. Takes a while to sort a car for that event...we are still messing with our front end & steering.
Cheers,
Ken
